Overview
This is the first of two courses which address the practice of professional engineering and professional built environment. The course is concerned largely with non-technical matters, independent of the specific disciplines, which involve the particular work undertaken, performance and responsibilities borne by the professional engineer and built environment practitioners. The major manifestation of this professional practice is the participation in professional development activities and the planning, execution and reporting of project work. Part of this course is directed at the preparation for the commencement of your final year research project.
The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the UniSQ accreditation agreement with the accrediting organisation/s (where relevant). ENG3902 nominated ePortfolio graduate (i.e., 3x specific nominated) capabilities and elements of competency demonstrated from the current learning pathway completed courses, and ENG3902 professional practice activities as defined in the online ePortfolio assessment scope PDF document located on the 精东传媒appDesk Assessment Tab.
This course focuses on a range of generic, transferable skills, rather than specific technical skills. Most activities are not discipline-specific and activities include consulting with supervising staff, a lecture and attendance at the annual "Project Conference" in which ENG4903 Professional Practice 2 students present their completed project work to other students, staff and members of various professions. Students will also participate in, and report on, a range of laboratory sessions, demonstrations, seminars and workshops provided by staff of the Faculty, the wider university and by industry representatives. Students are required to choose and self-organise the completion of similar activities off campus. These professional development activities seek to provide the student with insights into the "cutting edge" of current engineering and built environment practice.
This course contains a mandatory residential school for both external and on-campus students.
Course learning outcomes
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- reflect on professional skills with a view to the final year project; identify needs for improvement, and plan activities to attain these skills;
- plan, prepare and deliver a verbal presentation in English, to a professional standard, making effective use of presentation aids; present, defend and debate technical information;
- show initiative to establish contact and communicate effectively with supervisory, technical and administrative staff as well as peers;
- explain the importance and role of a professional conference; evaluate and critique conference presentations of peers and provide constructive feedback;
- select and justify professional development activities, during residential school and external to UniSQ; interact with professionals; evaluate activities and reflect on the relevance to personal and professional development needs.
