This course is aimed at providing students with practical work experience within legal or justice practice areas. The ability to work within their area of study in a legal or justice workplace will aid students in applying their knowledge and develop their employability skills. Students will gain insights into society and community expectations, which can be applied alongside the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom environment and to reflect and report on the experience while contributing to a specific practical activity or initiative. This is an elective course in the Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor and Criminology courses.

The purpose of this course is to give students the opportunity to experience the applied aspects of working in the area of their degree. This course aims to provide the student with experience in applying discipline knowledge and skills in the context of professional practice in order to strengthen discipline-specific learning and specialisation. The course allows students to gain a critical understanding of the role of reflection on learning and self-evaluation in professional environments.

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate [explain and apply] an understanding of approaches to ethical decision-making, an ability to recognise and reflect upon (and a developing ability to respond to) ethical issues likely to arise in professional contexts [in a law or justice workplace settings], an ability to recognise and reflect upon the professional responsibilities of [law and justices professionals] in promoting justice and in service to the community. (TLO2/PO2).
2. Identify and articulate legal [or justice] issues, apply [legal or justice] reasoning and research to generate appropriate responses to legal [and justice] issues, engage in critical analysis and make a reasoned choice amongst alternatives, [applying critical reflection skills that enhance learning from and response to challenges faced and successes achieved in the workplace] and think creatively in approaching legal [and justice] issues and generating appropriate responses [as it relates to work integrated learning in a workplace setting] (TLO3/PO3).
3. Communicate in ways that are effective, appropriate, and persuasive [in the workplace including skills in oral and written communication, forensic judgement, courtesy, respect, and personal diplomacy in dealings with others including diverse groups, and cross-cultural communication] for legal and non-legal [and justice] audiences and collaborate effectively [utilising relevant professional/practice-based approaches in the workplace] (TLO5/PO5).
4. Learn and work independently and reflect on and assess their own capabilities and performance [to identify skill development goals; and develop strategies to help meet these], and make use of feedback as appropriate, to support professional development [by reflecting on and assessing achievements to create an individual portfolio of skills in their emergent profession and self-directed engagement and initiative as it relates to the professional context of a legal or justice workplace] (TLO6/PO6).
