Overview
The notion of 'research' is an increasingly common one in the everyday experiences of the community generally and even more so in the narrower confines of academic work. In the latter, research-based evidence and insights are the basic underpinnings of teaching and learning at all levels, and HDR students need to develop a capacity for critically engaging with research conducted and reported by others. This is one of the hallmarks of a professional. Within more formal research-based qualifications and awards, HDR students are expected to be not only 'research literate' but to also be able to demonstrate familiarity and competence with the application of a range of research approaches, evidence/data collection and analysis methods and forms of reporting the results of their own research-based work within an accepted ethical framework.
Students will critically engage with research design approaches in the social sciences or humanities. They will consider quantitative and qualitative perspectives, and will ethically explore relevant evidence or data-gathering methods and analysis. Students will build on their existing knowledge of research paradigms, and research problem and question development. They will apply their research methodology skills by participating in online discussions. In addition, they will be guided by their research supervisors in applying the ideas of this course to their own research. Students will also develop their preliminary research methodology design to assist them in the development of their confirmation document.
