Program focus

The aim of this program is to provide English language preparation for tertiary study based on the personal and intellectual transition required by individual students to succeed in higher education in the Australian context. It aims to develop thinking processes and academic English skills to prepare students from non-English speaking backgrounds for university education. It provides this transition for international students not fully prepared academically or requiring a higher level of English for tertiary study.

Program objectives

On successful completion of the English for Academic Purposes program, this program, students should be able to demonstrate:

• an understanding of, and an adjustment to, the academic cultural context of the Australian university;

• a capacity to take control of their own learning by using appropriate learning strategies;

• confidence and ability to think critically and to analyse an argument;

• competence in accessing and communicating concepts and ideas in spoken and written form as appropriate to the higher education context; and

• a capacity to establish working relationships with their lecturers and other students.

Admission requirements

• Resident status: students on international student visas or students from non-English speaking backgrounds resident in Australia

• Minimum academic requirements: completion of senior secondary schooling in the home country or Year 12 in an Australian High School or completed 'A' levels or mature-age entry.

Fee exempt places

All domestic students are offered a fee-free place provided they meet the citizenship and residency requirements as follows:

• Australian citizens

• holders of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa (and resident in Australia)

• holders of a Permanent Resident Visa (and resident in Australia)

• New Zealand citizens (resident in Australia).

Program structure

EAP I

Students must enrol in two courses:

• EAP7307 - Academic Speaking and Listening (2 unit points)

• EAP7308 - Academic Reading and Writing (2 unit points)

EAP II (Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students)

Students must enrol in the three core courses:

• EAP7310 - ¾«¶«´«Ã½apping at ¾«¶«´«Ã½app

• EAP7320 - Communication Processes

• EAP7340 - Academic English Skills

Students select one additional course based upon faculty pre-requisites from the following:

• EAP 7381 - Applied Communication (Level A)

• EAP7382 - Applied Communication (Level B)

• EAP7383 - Applied Communication (Level C)

EAP II (Postgraduate research and doctoral students) not available online at this time

Students must enrol in the three core courses:

• EAP7320 - Communication Processes

• EAP7340 - Academic English Skills

• EAP7350 - Language of Research (2 unit points)

Program completion requirements

To successfully pass the EAP program and be recommended for degree studies at USQ in the Faculty of Engineering, Business, Sciences and Arts, students must pass all courses in the program.

Students entering an undergraduate or postgraduate program in the Faculty of Education using successful completion from EAPP as satisfaction of the language requirement, must pass the EAP program and achieve an 'A' grade (75% or better) in two language courses - and .

Students entering a postgraduate research or doctoral program using successful completion from EAPP as satisfaction of the language requirement, must pass the EAP program and achieve an 'A' grade (75% or better) in two language courses - and .

Students failing courses in EAPP are required to retake those courses and seek recommendations from the Head of Program regarding a suitable pathway to gain entry to degree studies.

Students studying online are not eligible for entry to a postgraduate research or doctoral program at this time.

Required time limits

Standard duration of the on-campus program is a minimum of 20 weeks and a maximum of 36 weeks.

Standard duration of the online program is a minimum of ten weeks and a maximum of 70 weeks.
