Professional accreditation

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) Psychology major is available in both on-campus and external mode, and is fully accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a fourth-year program in psychology.

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program, students will be eligible to apply for provisional registration as a psychologist with the Psychologists Board of Australia. However, there is a requirement to complete a further two years of supervised practice or an approved Masters program after initial registration. Graduates are also eligible to apply to the Australian Psychological Society for Associate Membership. If graduates achieve a high level of Honours (either First Class or Second Class, Division A), they would be eligible to apply for a Masters program or PhD at USQ and other universities.

Program objectives

Upon completion of the Honours program, graduates will be able to:

• demonstrate high levels of proficiency in research and specific methodology including research planning and implementation, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of research results, and the presentation and communication of research findings

• demonstrate awareness of a wide range of research methods and the ethical and social responsibilities of a practising scientist

• apply the skills gained in the program to their specialist area with a high degree of proficiency

• undertake research-oriented careers or progress to higher level studies in their chosen specialist area

• meet the academic requirements for membership of professional societies or registration boards as practising discipline specialists

• proceed to PhD study subject to competitive evaluation of qualifications.

Admission requirements

General Requirements

To qualify for entry to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program students will:

• have been awarded a degree in the area of Honours study, normally, with a substantial amount of undergraduate study in the major area of the discipline in which the Honours study is to be undertaken

• be current in their major area of study. To ensure currency of knowledge, students will normally have commenced their undergraduate degree no earlier than eight years previous to the year of application and will have satisfied requirements for the award of that degree no more than three years previously

• have met minimum academic requirements in the relevant undergraduate program. These requirements normally include one or more of the following:

• achieved a Grade Point Average equivalent to the level of Credit or better for the whole program

• achieved a Grade Point Average equivalent to the level of Credit or better in the second and third years of the undergraduate degree

• achieved a Grade Point Average equivalent to the level of Credit or better in the major study in the undergraduate degree.

Additional Requirements

In addition to the above general requirements, candidates for the Psychology Major must have completed a program of study approved by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as constituting the first three years (or equivalent) of study in psychology within the last three years.

Candidates in other areas of research expertise must have submitted and had approved, a project proposal for which an appropriate supervisor is available before commencing studies. Candidates are required to make contact with an appropriate supervisor and are required to have their approval before submitting an application. When submitting an application, evidence is required of supervisor approval. Acceptance will be subject to the availability of a supervisor for the project.

Discretionary Admission

The Faculty of Health, Engineering and Sciences may admit students who do not satisfy all the general requirements for entry but who have a reasonable chance of success.

Domestic and International Applicants from a non-English speaking background are required to satisfy .

Program structure

The Honours program consists of eight units of study including project courses and specialised courses. The program has six majors - Applied Mathematics/Statistics, Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Climatology and Physics. The structure of the majors is given in the following table:

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) will be given further information about project selection with their offers.

The project courses give students appropriate opportunity for research and scientific investigation of a topic within the area of the major study.

Required time limits

Students have a maximum of 2 years to complete this program.

Major studies

On enrolment, each student must choose one of the majors Applied Mathematics/Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Climatology, Physics or Psychology.

IT requirements

Students should visit the USQ to check that their computers are capable of running the appropriate software and versions of Internet web browsers and to check the minimum and recommended standards for software.

Residential schools

For the Psychology Major there are two compulsory workshop blocks each semester, each usually of one week's duration (i.e., usually 6-7 days for full-time students and 3-5 days for part-time students). These workshops are compulsory for both on-campus and external students in the program. Students who apply from overseas will only be accepted if they are able and willing to reside in Australia for the duration of the program. Fourth year can be full-time (one year) or part-time (maximum of two years). Further information is available in the .

Credit

No exemptions will be given from any courses in the program. Candidates must complete all courses at USQ except in the case of the Applied Mathematics/Statistics major, for which students may complete up to two courses cross-institutionally.

A mid-year intake into the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program in psychology is available only at the Springfield campus.

Students are able to enrol in any offered mode of a course (on-campus, external or online), regardless of the program mode of study they enrolled in.

This major is only available in on-campus mode.

Notes

The two Maths/Stats Complementary Studies and two independent studies courses are staff-initiated and depend on staff research interests and/or areas of special expertise, or may be initiated by students. If student initiated, the student will be required to submit a proposal and a staff member would have to agree to supervise the student.
With the approval of the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Sciences, one of the CSC or MSC courses may be substituted with a Level 8 course from another discipline at USQ.
The semester of offering of on-campus courses may vary depending on student demand and staff availability.

Recommended enrolment pattern - Biology; Chemistry; Climatology and Physics major

Students are able to enrol in any offered mode of a course (on-campus, external or online), regardless of the program mode of study they enrolled in.

These majors are only available in on-campus mode. Students may commence their studies in either semester 1 or semester 2.

Students also select one other course from a choice of two. The compulsory courses are as follows.
