Program aims

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) aims to prepare midwives who meet current and future requirements of contemporary midwifery practice. This program is designed according to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) National Competency Standards for the Midwife (2006). Graduates will possess a range of skills to work autonomously and where appropriate, with other members of the inter-professional team in a variety of maternity settings or models of care. Graduates will be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Program objectives

  1. Exhibit a midwifery philosophy that is respectful, dignified and woman-centred when working in partnership with childrearing women and their families within human rights and educational frameworks;

  2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills aligned with core values of midwifery practice and collaborate effectively with partners considering historical, social and political influences;

  3. Contextualise legal and ethical frameworks to demonstrate professional midwifery practice reflective of cultural awareness and the individuals rights to social justice;

  4. Analyse and evaluate models of care, leadership and entrepreneurship to meet the needs of mothers and babies in contemporary society;

  5. Provide safe, competent and woman-centred care for women, babies and families across the continuum of pregnancy, childbirth and transition to parenting within diverse cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic populations;

  6. Integrate evidence based practice to inform clinical decisions and foster change in relation to maternity services and maternity care;

  7. Apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, well-developed judgement and responsibility in the context of increasing clinical competence and safety in the delivery of professional midwifery practice;

  8. Enable graduates to be eligible for registration and care of women as accountable, autonomous professionals.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

This program is at AQF Qualification Level 07. Graduates at this level will have broad and coherent knowledge and skills for professional work and/or further learning.

Admission requirements

Applicants meeting the following criteria may apply to be accepted into the program:

  • A Registered Nurse (Division 1) with a Bachelor degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification with current AHPRA registration.


PLEASE NOTE

  • Students will be required to meet Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requirements for registration as a midwife and/or registration as a student. All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Midwifery program will automatically be registered by USQ as a student with the . Further details of are available at this web site.

  • To fulfil midwifery education standards, students must attend all compulsory residential schools. See for details. Students unable to attend must withdraw from the associated course.

  • Students will be required to complete all (for more information see Standard Eight in the Midwife Accreditation Standards (2014)).

  • Students will be required to complete theoretical and midwifery practice experiences. Midwifery practice experience is mandatory and will obtained through unpaid placement. These experiences are the partnership between the student and the woman and they will be outside of scheduled placement hours. In addition, students are required to complete ten “continuity of care†experiences which involve an ongoing partnership between the student and pregnant and or birthing women. To meet the requirements for the mandatory continuity of care experience with women students will need to organise to meet the woman when it is suitable for her which will require negotiation of existing employment and personal commitments.

  • Midwifery Practice courses indicate a range of practice difficulties with Midwifery Practice 1 at a beginning level to more complex experiences (Midwifery Practice 8) and they must be taken in numerical sequence.


Other Mandatory Requirements

Students must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app of Southern Queensland, Queensland Health and other state or private facilities for clinical placement. These are all detailed on the Bachelor of Midwifery site on USQ ¾«¶«´«Ã½appDesk and include:

  • Blue Card

  • Australian Federal Police Certificate

  • Hepatitis B Immunisation

  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Immunisation

  • CPR Certificate

  • Queensland Health Student Orientation Requirements

  • QHealth-Occupational Health & Safety Certificates (4)

  • Clinical Placement Student Declaration

  • All other placements must meet the Professional Experience Placement Office (PEPO), state and facility-specific requirements.


If any of these documents are NOT current, you will NOT be allocated a placement.

This program is available via QTAC, or for eligible students, for direct entry via the Direct Entry online application process. Each application will be assessed on an individual basis, according to the Entry Requirements. The following important information must be included; otherwise the application will be delayed:

  • a certified copy of the applicant's Bachelor of Nursing degree or equivalent

  • evidence of current registration as a nurse (AHPRA certificate)


Acceptance of enrolment

Students will receive notification of enrolment offer by email from the USQ Recruitment and Admissions office. The student is then required to formally accept the offer of enrolment through the Recruitment and Admissions office.

All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a ¾«¶«´«Ã½app-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, you may be admitted to an award program.

Commonwealth supported place

Program structure

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) comprises of 16 units/16 courses that all must be successfully completed to finish this degree. In particular, to graduate with the Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) student will be required to successfully complete:

  • Midwifery practice experience courses by attending three (3) compulsory residential schools; and

  • All unpaid midwifery practice experience requirements of this degree through the midwifery practice experience courses

Clinical requirements

Midwifery Practice Experiences

To obtain external accreditation from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) for the Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry), 50% of the program must be attributed to practice experience. Practice experience will be obtained through practical laboratory and conducted during residential schools and through external unpaid practice experience.

Midwifery Practice Experience Courses – these courses contain practical laboratories conducted during the three (3) day residential schools at the start of semesters 1 and 2 in the first year and semester 1 of year two (full time):

  • MID2399 - Midwifery Practice 3 (12 hours)

Residential schools

There will be three (3) Residential Schools that will be conducted. For full-time students these will occur in at the start of semesters 1 and 2 in the first year and semester 1 of year two. Attendance at each three (3) day Residential School is compulsory. Residential schools will be conducted at the Ipswich campus.
