Professional accreditation
There is no mandatory professional accreditation for awards in the paramedic area.
USQ has obtained Preliminary Accreditation from The Council of Ambulance Authorities (CAA). Advancement to Provisional Accreditation from CAA is in progress. Application for full accreditation will be submitted once USQ has a cohort of graduates (as per CAA criteria).
Following graduation, students may apply for membership with Paramedics Australasia.
Program aims
Bachelor of Paramedicine graduates will be able to function effectively as new graduate level paramedics within local, national and international health care systems. Graduates of this paramedic program will have strong and relevant foundational knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to effectively and safely manage individuals in pre-hospital environments. USQ graduates will be committed to the ethos of pre-hospital care, personal development, professionalism and life-long learning.
Program objectives
Graduates who successfully complete the Bachelor of Paramedicine will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of biophysical sciences and apply this knowledge in the delivery of safe, quality care in the pre-hospital environment;

Develop knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to identify and manage common and serious illness;

Apply ethical and evidence based knowledge to ensure informed decision making appropriate to the discipline;

Australian Qualifications Framework
The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.
This program is at AQF Qualification Level 07. Graduates at this level will have broad and coherent knowledge and skills for professional work and/or further learning.

To be eligible for admission to the program applicants are required to have Australian Year 12 or equivalent with English (4,SA); plus recommended study of one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

Program structure
The Bachelor of Paramedicine consists of 22 compulsory courses (24 units) studied over three years. Note that one course, consisting of 4 weeks full-time placement, must be taken in Semester 3 of the first year of study.
Program completion requirements
To complete the program, a student must receive passing grades in all 23 compulsory courses (24 units) in accordance with the course list.
A student must enrol in the program full-time, except where:

the student is required to complete specific courses to comply with the defined progression in the program; or
-
the enrolment is approved by the Discipline Leader / Program Coordinator or Head of School .
Required time limits
This is a three year full-time program. Unless approved by the Head of School, a student must undertake the program without interruption.
Clinical requirements
There are four practical placements that must be satisfactorily completed. One 150 hour placement in Year 1 Semester 3 (4 weeks full time), one 150 hour placement in Year 2, Semester 2 (four weeks full time), one 185 hour placement in Year 3 Semester 1 (five weeks full time) and a final 185 hour placement in Year 3, Semester 2 (five weeks full time).
A student must comply with all Queensland Ambulance Service or other student placement organisation requirements before and during placements.

Before starting placement in Year 1 a student must complete placement requirements of the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) or other student placement organisation;

A student must undertake a medical assessment with a QAS approved medical providers; and
-
If, after considering the answers to the placement requirements, and the report from the medical practitioner (if any), the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app decides that the student is unable to fulfil the genuine educational requirements of the program, the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app may cancel the student’s enrolment.

Blood-borne virus
A carrier of a blood-borne virus must not undertake invasive procedures. Before commencing placement, a student must provide evidence of their status with respect to blood-borne viruses.

Medical Assessment
Validity: 3 years
The Medical Assessment is comprised of a health related questionnaire to be completed by the student and a medical assessment performed by a Medical Officer (from a QAS approved Medibank Health Solutions Clinic) using the QAS Medical Assessment - Undergraduate Student form.
The QAS Medical Assessment must be completed by a Medibank Health Solutions (MHS) Clinic. Details of your nearest MHS can be found in the Undergraduate Practical Placement Information Kit.
The Medical Assessment must be completed before undertaking the HRFA and students must submit their 'Fit Slip' to the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app.

Hepatitis B Immunisation
Validity: Once a student has proven immunity, they are not required to submit another Hep B serology report to the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app.
As part of the Medical Assessment, students are required to complete a course of vaccination against Hepatitis B and provide evidence of immunity to the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app. Students are encouraged to commence this vaccination course as soon as possible after accepting a place in the program, as acquiring immunity may take up to 7 months.

Undergraduate ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Student Induction
Students must complete an Undergraduate ¾«¶«´«Ã½app Student Induction which will be conducted by the Queensland Ambulance Service prior to the commencement of the first placement.

Criminal History Check
Validity: 3 years
Note that international history checks will vary.
If a student has resided in a country outside of Australia for a period of 12 months or more (cumulative) in the past 10 years, they are required to provide a Criminal History Report from the appropriate authority in that country. If a student has spent a total of 12 months or more in Country A and a further 12 months or more in Country B in the last 10 years, a report is required from each of those countries. Information on the relevant authority for each country can be viewed at the Department of Immigration & Citizenship site.

Uniform & Personal Protective Equipment
Students must purchase and wear appropriate clothing/uniform as stipulated by QAS/USQ and must purchase and carry stipulated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whilst on placement.
Students will be given access to order their uniforms shortly after the commencement of the program.
IT requirements
Students should refer to the USQ to check that their computers are capable of running the appropriate software and versions of Internet web browsers and to check the minimum and recommended standards for software.
Other program requirements
A student must, throughout the program, hold:
-
an Apply First Aid (formerly Senior First Aid) certificate that includes a CPR component, issued by the St John Ambulance Association or a comparable body approved by the Program Coordinator; and
-
a current Blue Card, issued by the Queensland Government Public Safety Business Agency, or have an employment exemption from holding a card.
Immunisation Schedule
Before commencing a course in which, in the opinion of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app, the student may be at risk of contracting or transmitting a blood-borne virus or other disease, the student must complete a schedule of immunisations approved by the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app.
This requirement may be waived only if:

the student provides evidence of his or her status with respect to immunity against blood-borne viruses or other diseases prescribed in the schedule; or
-
approved by the Discipline Leader (or nominee).
