Professional accreditation

The Bachelor of Human Services is undergoing accreditation with the (ACWA).

Students who successfully complete 400 hours of professional placement will be eligible for ACWA accreditation. Students not wishing to undertake the three professional placement courses and students not located in Australia should apply to the program coordinator to undertake three approved courses in place of the three professional placement courses.

Professional recognition - Counselling major: Graduates who have completed all eight units within the Counselling major, and who have successfully completed one counselling field placement, will be eligible for Level 1 membership with the .

Attendance recommendations - Counselling major: Students aiming to become professional counsellors and/or join professional counselling associations, are strongly recommended to attend residential schools for all of the following courses: , , , , and . Students who attend residential schools will receive certification of attendance.

Program aims

This program aims to provide an enhanced understanding of the basic issues, principles and human services paradigms in the social and community sector together with skills and theoretical frameworks for people interested in becoming human services professionals in the community and non-government sector. Particular major and minor studies will focus on competencies required for employment in these roles. The program affords the opportunity to engage in specialised study of marginalised groups.

Program objectives

On completion of this program students will be able to:

  • develop and apply knowledge and professional skills in human services surrounding the key issues appropriate to working in the community and government sectors

  • comprehend broad and coherent knowledge of professional and contextual issues in human services, counselling, disability studies, human resources management, indigenous studies and community development

  • display an ability to communicate in a range of forms, including formal and informal, oral and written

  • demonstrate the ability to work in teams

  • examine theoretical knowledge of human services based on social justice and human rights within an Australian and international perspective

  • evaluate theoretical knowledge of environmental, economic and social contexts including knowledge of issues of indigeneity, diversity management, equity and justice.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

This program is at AQF Qualification Level 07. Graduates at this level will have broad and coherent knowledge and skills for professional work and/or further learning.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Have achieved a minimum Overall Position (OP) 15, tertiary entrance rank 66 or equivalent qualification.^
  • Subject Pre-requisite: English (4,SA) or equivalent.

  • English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 2.


All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a ¾«¶«´«Ã½app-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

The 2017 OP and tertiary entrance ranks are based on agreed QTAC schedules which assess formal study at Year 12 or , tertiary, preparatory, professional or vocational qualifications or work experience, as detailed in the QTAC Assessment of Qualifications Manual and QTAC Assessor Guidelines.

Requirements for professional experience placements

Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA) accreditation is only applicable to domestic students who complete 400 hours of professional placement. To be eligible for ACWA accreditation, students are required to successfully complete (134 hours), (134 hours) and (133 hours).

Students not seeking ACWA accreditation may apply to the program coordinator to take approved courses instead of the three placement courses.

For students transitioning in the Counselling major who elect to remain with the 12 unit structure the course (2 unit) will be available for those students for the duration of the transitional arrangements.

Applicants must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app of Southern Queensland for practical placement. Please refer to the relevant for Bachelor of Human Services and Bachelor of Human Services Honours Students.

Child & Family Studies/Health and Social Wellbeing majors - may be required to demonstrate immunisation status depending upon the nature of service delivery and the conditions assigned by the host human services agency.

Program fees

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of a student's higher education andstudents pay a , which varies depending on the courses undertaken. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the .

Domestic full fee paying place

Domestic full fee paying places are funded entirely through the full fees paid by the student. Full fees vary depending on the courses that are taken. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the

Program structure

The program comprises 24 units including 8 core courses/units (or 5 core courses/units and 3 approved courses) and one of the following combinations:

  • one 8-unit Human Services major, one 4 unit minor and 4 electives or

  • one 8-unit Human Services major and two 4 unit minors or

  • one 8-unit Human Services major and 8 electives or

  • one 8-unit Human Services major and one other major.*


*The second 8-unit major can be chosen from any approved 8-unit major in the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app. Students should ensure that they complete the appropriate courses in their second major in order to graduate with a double major in the Bachelor of Human Services. Where two majors are chosen which have some compulsory courses in common, the overlap will be made up by taking extra electives.

At least four courses in the program must be at Level 3.

Minor Studies

Minor studies are designed to enable students to widen their knowledge and perspectives, or to complement their choice of major. Courses must be taken over two levels and should be in the same discipline or recognised multi-disciplinary area. Enrolment requirements must be satisfied for any course selected.

Articulation

The Diploma of Human Services and Development will articulate into the Bachelor of Human Services program provided students have completed the following eight courses: ,, , four courses selected from the Bachelor of Human services core or any major and one elective.

Bachelor of Human Services (BHMS) articulation into the Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) (BHSH) is available for all majors.

All majors except, Health & Social Wellbeing major (HSW):

Students enrolled in all majors (except HSW) should complete 3rd year in the BHMS degree and providing they have a GPA of 5.0, they can articulate into the 4th year of the BHSH to undertake the honours program.

Health & Social Wellbeing (HWS) major only:

For students whose major is the 8 unit HSW major, if they wish to articulate into the honours program they need to enrol in and complete the 3rd year of BHSH (with a GPA of 5.0) so that the students get access to the necessary specialist courses.

The program enrolment pattern for the 4th year of the BHSH is the same for all majors.
