Program aims

For Arts students

The program aims to produce diplomates who have:

  • demonstrated competencies in communication skills necessary for further academic study in appropriate discipline areas

  • acquired basic knowledge in one or more disciplines in a relevant degree program.


For students intending to transfer to other USQ programs

This program aims to provide students with:

  • an introduction to university study by a free selection of courses from across the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app

  • an awareness of the nature of study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences

  • developed foundation knowledge, skills and competencies in at least one discipline area

  • a fundamental ability to express thoughts with clarity and coherence in written and/or oral forms

  • acquired sufficient knowledge to make informed choices about possible further study.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

This program is at AQF Qualification Level 05. Graduates at this level will have specialised knowledge and skills for skilled/paraprofessional work and/or further learning.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Have achieved a minimum Overall Position (OP) 17, tertiary entrance rank 62 or equivalent qualification.^
  • Subject Pre-requisite: English (4, SA) or equivalent.

  • English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 2.


All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a ¾«¶«´«Ã½app-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

These are determined by the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app for specific programs each Semester. The 2018 OP and tertiary entrance ranks are based on agreed QTAC schedules which assess formal study at Year 12 or , tertiary, preparatory, professional or vocational qualifications or work experience, as detailed in the QTAC Assessment of Qualifications Manual and QTAC Assessor Guidelines.

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of a students' higher education and students pay a , which varies depending on the courses undertaken. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the .

Program structure

The Diploma of Arts comprises eight units of study, generally requiring completion of eight courses, one of which is a core course. The remaining seven units of courses come from USQ course offerings. While students may choose any seven courses, it is recommended that study is chosen from three discipline areas unless students plan to complete seven units from a major study in a single discipline area. The Diploma of Arts may articulate into other USQ undergraduate degree programs. Students are advised to contact the relevant Faculty to discuss their course choices to ensure optimal articulation pathways.
