Professional accreditation

This program is accredited with the (ACWA).

Students who successfully complete a minimum of 400 hours of professional placement (fieldwork) will be eligible to apply for ACWA accreditation. Professional placement courses are available in the following majors:

  • Child and Family Studies

  • Counselling

  • Community Development and Indigenous Studies

  • Health and Social Wellbeing


Students not located in Australia should apply to the program coordinator to undertake three approved courses in place of the three professional placement courses, of note, this will make them ineligible for accreditation with ACWA.

Professional placement courses are not required in the Human Resource Management major and this major does not have ACWA accreditation.

Professional recognition - Counselling major: Graduates who have completed all eight units within the Counselling major, and who have successfully completed one counselling field placement, will be eligible for Level 1 membership with the . As these graduates will have completed a minimum of 400 hours of placement in total, they are also eligible to apply for ACWA accreditation.

Attendance recommendations - Counselling major: Students aiming to become professional counsellors and/or join professional counselling associations, are strongly recommended to attend residential schools for all of the following courses: , , , , and . Students who attend residential schools will receive certification of attendance.

Program aims

This program aims to provide an enhanced understanding of the basic issues and principles in the community sector together with skills and theoretical frameworks for people interested in becoming human services professionals in the community sector. Particular major and minor studies will focus on competencies required for these roles. The program affords the opportunity to engage in specialised study of marginalised groups and the opportunity to complete a research project to promote the importance of evidence based practice. It prepares graduates for professional and leadership roles equipped with research knowledge and skills.

On successful completion of the program students should be able to apply:

  • professional skills, autonomy, adaptability, responsibility as a practitioner and an understanding of the key issues appropriate for working in the community sector

  • advanced knowledge of professional and contextual issues in human services

  • advanced communication skills in a range of forms, including formal and informal, oral and written

  • leadership, management and research skills appropriate for working in human services

  • advanced theoretical knowledge of community development and welfare based on social justice/human rights perspective from within Australia, and globally

  • competence in the specified aims and objectives of their chosen major

  • advanced technical knowledge of the environmental, economic and social context especially including such issues as indigeneity, diversity, equity, and justice.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Have achieved a minimum Overall Position (OP) 13, tertiary entrance rank 71 or equivalent qualification.^
  • Subject Pre-requisite: English (4,SA) or equivalent.

  • English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 2.


All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a 精东传媒app-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

Requirements for professional experience placements

Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA) accreditation is only applicable to domestic students who complete a minimum of 400 hours of professional placement. To be eligible to apply for ACWA accreditation, students are required to successfully complete (140 hours), (140 hours) and (140 hours).

Applicants must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the 精东传媒app of Southern Queensland for practical placement. Please refer to the relevant for Bachelor of Human Services and Bachelor of Human Services Honours Students.

Child & Family Studies/Health and Social Wellbeing majors - may be required to demonstrate immunisation status depending upon the nature of service delivery and the conditions assigned by the host human services agency.

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of a students' higher education and students pay a , which varies depending on the courses undertaken. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the .

Program completion requirements

Students will be eligible to graduate from the Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) following satisfactory completion of all theoretical and fieldwork components (if required) including completion of a minor research project and submission of a thesis. Some courses have compulsory attendance requirements and to satisfy the placement courses students must participate in the required hours of placement offered at off-campus venues and satisfactorily demonstrate the learning objectives of the course.

Students may apply to articulate into the 3rd year of the Health and Wellbeing major if they hold a Bachelor degree in a health or development studies related field (e.g. speech therapy, occupational therapy, nursing or psychology).

Admission into the 4th year of the program is contingent upon students having completed the first 3 years of the program maintaining a minimum GPA of 5.0 or by permission of the program coordinator.

Students articulating from Counselling, Human Resources Management, Child and Family Studies, Community Development and Indigenous Studies majors in the Bachelor of Human Services (BHMS):

Students who have achieved a GPA of 5.0 are able to transition to the Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) degree at 4th year level in order to undertake an honours program. Students enrolled in the Health and Social Wellbeing major of the BHMS who wish to pursue honours study are required to articulate into the 3rd year of the Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) degree in order to avail themselves of the specialisation.

Program structure

The program comprises 32 units including 14 core courses (16 units) (or 11 core courses and 3 approved courses #) and one of the following combinations:

  • one 12-unit Human Services major (Health and Social Wellbeing) and 4 electives, or

  • one 8-unit Human Services major, one 4-unit minor and 4 electives, or

  • one 8-unit Human Services major and two 4-unit minors, or

  • one 8-unit Human Services major and 8 electives, or

  • one 8-unit Human Services major and one other major.*


*The second 8-unit major can be chosen from any approved 8-unit major in the 精东传媒app.

At least four courses in the program must be at level 3. Where two majors are chosen which have some compulsory courses in common, the overlap will be made up by taking extra electives.

Students who fail to maintain a minimum GPA of 5.0, or do not have the permission of the program coordinator, will not be permitted to enrol in the fourth year of the program and will be exited from the degree. Students who have successfully completed the first 16 units of the Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) in accordance with the recommended enrolment pattern (completed 6 specified core units, at least 4 courses from within one Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) major and 6 courses allowed within the Bachelor of Human Services (Honours) structure) may exit with the .
