Program aims

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) aims to prepare midwives who meet current and future requirements of contemporary midwifery practice. This program is designed according to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) National Competency Standards for the Midwife (2006). Graduates will possess a range of skills to work autonomously and where appropriate, with other members of the inter-professional team in a variety of maternity settings or models of care. Graduates will be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency ().

Program objectives

  1. Exhibit a midwifery philosophy that is respectful, dignified and woman-centred when working in partnership with childrearing women and their families within human rights and educational frameworks;

  2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills aligned with core values of midwifery practice and collaborate effectively with partners considering historical, social and political influences;

  3. Contextualise legal and ethical frameworks to demonstrate professional midwifery practice reflective of cultural awareness and the individuals rights to social justice;

  4. Analyse and evaluate models of care, leadership and entrepreneurship to meet the needs of mothers and babies in contemporary society;

  5. Provide safe, competent and woman-centred care for women, babies and families across the continuum of pregnancy, childbirth and transition to parenting within diverse cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic populations;

  6. Integrate evidence based practice to inform clinical decisions and foster change in relation to maternity services and maternity care;

  7. Apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, well-developed judgement and responsibility in the context of increasing clinical competence and safety in the delivery of professional midwifery practice;

  8. Enable graduates to be eligible for registration and care of women as accountable, autonomous professionals.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • A Registered Nurse (Division 1) with a Bachelor degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification with current AHPRA registration.

  • English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 3.


Satisfaction of admission requirements does not guarantee admission.

All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

Requirements for professional experience placements

Practical experience is an integral component of the program and each student is required to undertake and satisfactorily complete 1320 hours of practical experience (1240 hours of professional experience placements).

Progression into practical courses is dependent upon a pass grade in theoretical and other practical courses which have been set as prerequisites.

Applicants must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the 精东传媒app of Southern Queensland and Queensland Health for practical placement. Please refer to the applicable for Nursing and Midwifery Students.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) comprises of 16 units/16 courses that all must be successfully completed to finish this degree. In particular, to graduate with the Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) students will be required to successfully complete:

  • Midwifery practice experience courses by attending mandatory residential schools; and

  • All unpaid midwifery practice experience requirements of this degree through the midwifery practice experience courses

Residential schools

There are three (3) courses with mandatory Residential Schools. For full-time students these will occur:

  • In the week prior to Year 1, Semester 1 and in week 12-15 (depending on the timetable) of Year 1, Semester 1 (course has 2 x 3 day blocks)

  • Two weeks prior to Year 2, Semester 1 (1.5 days for and 1.5 days for scheduled consecutively)


Students unable to attend must withdraw from the associated course. Residential schools will be conducted at the Ipswich campus.

Midwifery Practice Experience Courses - these courses contain practical laboratories conducted during the mandatory residential schools:

  • (2 x 24 hours (2 x 3 day block) = 48 hours total))

  • (12 hours (1.5 days)) (conducted consecutively with MID3102)

  • (12 hours (1.5 days)) (conducted consecutively with MID 3101 )
