Program structure
The Bachelor of Creative Arts consists of 24 units. These are broadly divided into specialisations (in Film, Television and Radio; Music; Theatre or Visual Arts), extended majors, majors, minors, electives and one core Arts course. Each Creative Arts area of specialisation offers a minimum of 16 courses, commencing with a foundation year of 8 courses that is inclusive of the School core CMS1000 Communication and Scholarship. At the completion of the foundation year, students will be able to map out their pathway in the remainder of the program, with a greater or lesser degree of further specialisation, combinations of extended majors, majors, minors, and electives, or hybridisation as they wish. Students may combine one of the 16 unit extended majors with another 8 unit major from within Creative Arts or beyond, or with suites of minors and electives. Where available, each specialisation can also encompass 20 or 24 unit extended majors.
Students should take one of the following combinations of elements:
-
16 unit Creative Arts Extended Major plus an eight unit major in either another discipline in the Bachelor of Creative Arts or other undergraduate major in Arts or any available major across the university. This is the most ideal combination for students seeking to undertake postgraduate teaching qualifications upon completion in order to become a secondary school teacher as it provides ample room for a second teaching area;
-
16 unit Extended Major plus 2 x 4 unit Minor. This combination allows flexibility in choosing two possible minor suites, and thus up to three areas of study within Creative Arts, or up to two other areas from anywhere in the university alongside a Creative Arts specialisation;
-
16 unit Extended Major plus 1 x 4 unit Minor plus 4 electives. This allows for maximum flexibility.
-
20 unit Extended Major plus 1 x 4 unit Minor or 4 electives. This allows students to undertake an extended specialisation in their chosen Creative Arts discipline and still achieve a Minor in any other available area;
-
24 unit Extended Major. Subject to availability, certain pathways in individual disciplines allow students the flexibility to fully specialise in a single area of study for the entire degree. In some cases, as in the Acting Studio, a 24 unit enrolment pattern is the only way to complete the pathway (please consult Recommended Enrolment Patterns for more details);
-
students may also elect to divide a major of 16 courses in one discipline area into two majors of eight courses across two discipline areas. Students wishing to undertake such a hybrid major will require consultation and approval from the Bachelor of Creative Arts program coordinator and to complete the entry requirements for each chosen discipline.
Students will be advised to enrol in specific combinations of majors, minors, and electives to enhance their opportunities for employment or further study. Further details of these combinations can be obtained from the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts. In some instances, however, combinations preferred by individual students may not be available due to quota, timetable, or enrolment pattern constraints.

Program completion requirements
In order to be eligible to graduate, candidates must have completed 24 units of study including a minimum of 16 courses from Creative Arts. These 16 courses will normally be taken in one of the four available disciplines: Film, Television and Radio; Music; Theatre; and Visual Arts.
Core courses
All students must take the core course . The recommended pattern for enrolment in this core course by full-time on-campus students is in semester one year one. This pattern should only be varied with the permission of the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts. There are an additional two School core courses that most students undertaking the Bachelor of Creative Arts will be advised to enrol in throughout the third year of their degree (; ) in accord with recommended enrolment patterns.
Major studies
The Bachelor of Creative Arts program has four discipline-focused specialisations- Film, Television and Radio (FTR), Music; Theatre; Visual Arts. Each discipline specialisation contains several possible pathways made up of 16, 20, and 24 unit extended majors.
-
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Film, Television and Radio)
This specialisation includes extended majors in Film/Animation, Television/Radio and Animation/Broadcast
-
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Music)
The Music specialisation offers studio practice in Contemporary Singing and a range of instrumental and collaborative music practices.
-
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Theatre)
This specialisation includes extended majors in Acting and Theatre Studies.
-
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts)
This specialisation offers studio practice in Ceramics, Gallery Studies, Painting, Printmaking, and Spatial Construction.
A major study is a specified group of courses with a value of at least eight units. Students in the Bachelor of Creative Arts will choose one of a series of extended majors offered as part of their selected specialisation. An extended major is a specified group of courses with values of 16, 20, or 24 units. Eight-unit majors are also offered across all specialisations and can be combined with 16 unit majors for students wishing to undertake two areas of study in the Creative Arts. A major must have courses over three levels and contain at least two courses at third level (extended majors must have at least four courses at third level).
Course lists for each major can be found under Recommended Enrolment Patterns
The Bachelor of Creative Arts also has a fifth specialisation available:
-
Bachelor of Creative Arts – Hybrid Specialisation
Students may elect to do two majors of eight courses each across two discipline areas. This must incorporate one practice major and one theory major within Creative Arts (as listed in the eight-unit majors below) to make up the equivalent of a 16 unit extended major. Students may then choose further practice or theory courses from either discipline to make up the remaining eight courses but this must also include the completion of the mandatory core course, . Students wishing to undertake such a hybrid major will require consultation and approval from the Bachelor of Creative Arts program coordinator. They will also need to have satisfied the admission requirements (including potential audition/interview) of each area they wish to study. Students choosing this specialisation will only see ‘Bachelor of Creative Arts’ on their testamur.
Extended Majors
Extended majors are comprised of a minimum of 16 courses within discipline-focused areas of specialisation. Students enrolling in the BCAR will normally choose (and audition/interview for) one extended major. Each extended major commences with a foundation year of eight courses that is inclusive of the School core . The following extended major studies are offered:
Film Television and Radio – Film/Animation (20 unit Major)
Film Television and Radio – Television/Radio (20 unit Major)
Film Television and Radio – Animation/Broadcast (20 unit Major)
Film Television and Radio – Film (16 unit Major)
Film Television and Radio – Animation (16 unit Major)
Film Television and Radio – Television (16 unit Major)
Film Television and Radio – Radio (16 unit Major)
Music (16 unit Major)
Music (20 unit Major)
Music (24 unit Major)
Theatre Studies (16 unit Major)
Theatre – Acting (24 unit Major)
Visual Arts (24 unit Major)
Visual Arts (16 unit Major)
Other Creative Arts Majors
The following eight-unit majors can be combined with a 16 unit extended major as a second major:
Film, Television, and Radio (8 unit Major)
Music Practice (8 unit Major)
Theatre Practice (8 unit Major)
Theatre Theory (8 unit Major)
Visual Arts Practice (8 unit Major)
Visual Arts Theory (8 unit Major)
Choice of a second major from within Creative Arts will depend on the availability of the subject area, timetabling constraints, quotas and other restrictions such as interviews in certain areas of the Creative Arts, as well as approval of the Faculty of Business, Education, Law, and Arts.
Other non-Creative Arts Majors in the Bachelor of Creative Arts
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Arts are able to take one major or minor/elective study from other undergraduate programs offered by the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app of Southern Queensland, with the approval of the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts.
For Bachelor of Creative Arts purposes, a major in these areas comprises eight units of which at least two must be at Level 3. Enrolment in these majors is subject to prerequisites, quota availability, and timetabling constraints.
These majors may only be listed as a second or third major or minor/elective study, not as a first major.
Minor Studies
Minor studies are designed to enable students to widen their knowledge and perspectives. Courses must be taken over two levels and should be in the same discipline or recognised multi-disciplinary area.
Students who take only two major studies must take one of the Minors indicated in the section.
All of the discipline areas of the Creative Arts will offer suites of minors and electives from their existing major course offerings. Students should take courses to the value of at least four units in the selected minor study. Choice of a minor will depend on the availability of the subject area, timetabling constraints, quotas and other restrictions such as interviews in certain areas of the Creative Arts, as well as approval of the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts.
Electives/Approved courses
Elective courses are designed to enable students to further increase their knowledge and widen their perspectives. Choice of an elective will depend on the availability of the course(s), timetabling constraints, quotas, and other restrictions such as auditions and interviews in certain areas of the Arts, as well as approval by the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts.
Courses available for elective study are generally those found in Minor studies and are listed in the Minor studies section..
IT requirements
Students should refer to .
Access to high-level computers is necessary. On-campus students will access appropriately equipped laboratories, but should consider acquisition of their own computer. Students should visit the USQ minimum computing standards to check that their computers are capable of running the appropriate software and versions of Internet web browsers and to check the minimum and recommended standards for software.
External students should be able to access a computer with the minimum standards as advised by the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app. All students should have access to email and the Internet via a computer running the latest versions of Internet web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. The ¾«¶«´«Ã½app has a wireless network for on-campus students' computers. In order to take advantage of this facility and further enhance their on-campus learning environment, students should consider purchasing a notebook/laptop computer with wireless connectivity. A notebook/laptop may be required for some courses..
Articulation
Students undertaking aspects of the Bachelor of Creative Arts as an extension of TAFE studies, or through any of our current Articulation Agreements (such as the College of Creative Arts in Melbourne), are encouraged to visit the for current advice on enrolments.
Exit points
Students may exit with the Diploma of Arts if they have completed 8 courses as follows:
-
7 other courses from the Bachelor of Creative Arts.
Students may exit with the Associate Degree of Creative Arts if they have completed 16 courses as follows:
-

Credit
Credit will normally only be granted on the basis of formal studies of equivalent material undertaken at a college of TAFE, college of advanced education or university. Studies successfully completed within the last five years are automatically eligible to be used as a basis for a claim for credit. Studies completed more than five years ago will be considered, but should be accompanied by evidence that the knowledge and skills acquired from those studies have been maintained. Students who believe that they may qualify for credit should consult the for further information about the content of courses and the procedures to be followed for credit claims.
Students who have been granted credit have a responsibility to ensure that their knowledge and skills are kept up to date in these areas. This is particularly important when they have been granted credit from a course which is a pre-requisite for another course. Refer to the section entitled in the Guide to policies and procedures.
Students who have completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in an area specifically related to one of the majors in this program within the last five years, will normally be eligible for up to 8 credits and up to 12 credits respectively.
Course transfers
Students wishing to transfer from another degree into the Bachelor of Creative Arts (BCAR) may do so. However, in addition to your USQ application, you are required to audition and/or interview for the major of your choice. Please see Admission Requirements above. It is the responsibility of the student to register for this process.
Honours
Students wishing to undertake further study, and who meet the entry requirements, may apply to enrol in the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) program. Honours pathways are available in the Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts specialisations. Further information is available at BCAH Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours).
Other information
Film, Television and Radio (FTR), Music, Theatre and Visual Arts majors will require materials, clothing and resources which relate to each major.
Students studying both practical and theory majors need to be aware that the theory major has equal importance for successful completion of their degree.
Enrolment
All students are urged to adhere to the recommended enrolment patterns as detailed in relevant sections of this handbook. Completion of enrolment requirements will be necessary before a student will be permitted to enrol in more advanced courses.
Students should also heed the following advice:
-
one major of eight units OR two minor studies of four units OR a minor study of four units plus four elective units may be taken from non-Creative Arts undergraduate programs with approval of the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts;
