The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) articulates from the Bachelor of Laws. The Bachelor of Laws has been accredited by the , and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland as an approved academic qualification under the Supreme Court (Admission) Rules 2004 (Qld). USQ law programs have also been approved by the Australian Law Schools Standards Committee under the Standards for Australian Law Schools adopted by the Council of Australian Law Deans. The Bachelor of Laws will partially satisfy the requirements to practise as a lawyer in Queensland or elsewhere in Australia. Intending lawyers must also complete an approved practical legal training course in order to become admitted to practise law. There is an option in the Honours year of gaining a credit for four units of law approved courses by the completion of an approved practical legal training program. Program aims

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) provides students with the opportunity for further advanced study of law, not only to further prepare for practice but also to develop advanced specialised knowledge in select fields, advanced critical and original thinking skills, and higher-level skills in research, analysis and communication. The Honours program is a pathway to higher degree study.

Program objectives

On successful completion of this program students will be able, both with intellectual independence and collaboratively, to:

• demonstrate an understanding of a coherent and advanced body of knowledge of underlying principles and concepts of specialised areas of law, and adapt this knowledge in different practical or theoretical contexts

• demonstrate knowledge of a range of research principles and methods applicable within the discipline of law

• plan, design, execute and use research and scholarship in a significant legal project, and to exercise critical thinking and judgment in developing new understandings of law

• demonstrate cognitive and technical skills needed to review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise practical legal knowledge or theoretical legal concepts, and to identify and provide solutions to complex legal problems

• communicate legal knowledge and ideas clearly and coherently in oral and written forms.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

• Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree in law with a pass at either:

  • a credit level (grade point average of 5.0/7) in the entire program and permission of the relevant Program Coordinator

  • a grade point average of 5.2/7 in the third level of the degree, including an 'A' or better level pass in at least one course.

  
  

• English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 3.

For a candidate with equivalent qualifications, special permission of the Executive Dean on the advice of the relevant Program Coordinator is required.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program consists of eight units of study. For all students, this comprises four units of research training and supervised research dissertation. It also includes either four units of law approved courses (see below for details) or the completion of an approved practical legal training (PLT) program offered by a PLT provider. Students who elect to undertake the PLT option may request a credit for the four law approved courses.

Credit for completion of Practical Legal Training (PLT). Students may be eligible for credit of 4 units within the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program on completion of an approved Practical Legal Training (PLT) program. As USQ does not offer a PLT program, students who wish to undertake this option are advised to contact an approved provider for program requirements and fees. Students can seek information from the School of Law and Justice on approved PLT providers and the requirements for granting of credit in the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) on completion of an approved PLT program.

Honours grading

The class of Honours to be awarded to a student is determined on the basis of both the grade point average over the mandatory 8 credit point Honours component and the grade achieved in the Honours project. The USQ standard Honours assessment framework applies. For students who undertake Practical Legal Training (PLT) and who on that basis seek credit for 4 units of law approved courses, the grade point average of the PLT program will not count as the GPA of 4 units of courses for the GPA calculation for Honours.

Students are able to enrol in any offered mode of a course (on-campus, external or online), regardless of the program mode of study they enrolled in.

Students may choose to complete LAW8006 Major Law Honours Dissertation (2 units) in either semester 1 or semester 2. Law approved courses will need to be chosen to suit the chosen pattern where applicable. Credit for completion of an approved practical legal training program may be available as four units in semester 2, or as two units in each semester.
