Professional accreditation

The Bachelor of Midwifery Graduate Entry is awaiting accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and once accredited will be listed as an approved program with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).

To gain registration as a midwife, graduates of this program will have to satisfy registration criteria of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

To gain registration, applicants will also have to meet standards in English language skills (if English is their second language), criminal history, and professional indemnity insurance. To maintain registration, midwives are also required to meet standards of Continuing Professional Development and Recency of Practice. All of these standards can be found on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia website: NMBA Registration Standards.

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) will keep a register of students enrolled in the Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) for the duration of their study or clinical training. UniSQ as the education provider will pass on students' details directly to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) for registration. No fees are required. UniSQ is also obliged to report to Ahpra when there is a ‘reasonable belief’ that a student has an impairment that, when undertaking clinical training, may place the public at substantial risk of harm. Program aims

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) aims to prepare midwives who meet current and future requirements of contemporary midwifery practice. This program is designed according to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice (2018) . Graduates will possess a range of skills to work autonomously and where appropriate, with other members of the inter-professional team in a variety of maternity settings or models of care. On completion of program students will be eligible to apply for registration as a midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency ().

Program Rules

• Satisfactorily complete eight x 1 credit point theory courses and four x 2 credit point clinical courses, 16 credit point units (12 mandatory courses) as listed in the standard progression to graduate from the program.

• Satisfactorily complete all courses within 5 years.

• Maintain satisfactory academic achievement throughout the duration of the program, consistent with the UniSQ Student Academic Progress Procedure.

• Meet all mandatory residential schools or clinical laboratory requirements where this is present in courses.

• Satisfactorily complete 100% of clinical placement hours. Students who do not satisfactorily complete and/or demonstrate unsatisfactory performance in a clinical placement will need to discuss their performance with the Clinical Director and the Program Director before enrolling in any further placement courses or withdrawing from a placement course.

• Must submit all assessment items in a course.

• Students who enrol in and subsequently fail a course twice, must discuss their enrolment pattern with the Program Director before enrolling in the course again.

Program objectives

1. Exhibit a midwifery philosophy that is respectful, dignified and woman-centred when working in partnership with childrearing women and their families within human rights and educational frameworks;

2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills aligned with core values of midwifery practice and collaborate effectively with partners considering historical, social and political influences;

3. Contextualise legal and ethical frameworks to demonstrate professional midwifery practice reflective of cultural awareness and the individuals rights to social justice;

4. Analyse and evaluate models of care, leadership and entrepreneurship to meet the needs of mothers and babies in contemporary society;

5. Provide safe, competent and woman-centred care for women, babies and families across the continuum of pregnancy, childbirth and transition to parenting within diverse cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic populations;

6. Integrate evidence based practice to inform clinical decisions and foster change in relation to maternity services and maternity care;

7. Apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, well-developed judgement and responsibility in the context of increasing clinical competence and safety in the delivery of professional midwifery practice;

8. Enable graduates to be eligible for registration and care of women as accountable, autonomous professionals.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

• A Registered Nurse (Division 1) with a Bachelor degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification with current Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) registration.

• English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 4.

• Interview with Midwifery program representative and a service provider representative to demonstrate ability to commit to the requirements of the program.

Please note: Satisfaction of admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Places within the Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) program are limited by quota. Selection from applicants who meet admission requirements will be based on ranking by GPA from previous Nursing studies and a pre-admission interview. Quota size is determined by the availability of hospital placements. Where the quota is filled, no further places will be offered.

All students are required to satisfy the applicable . If students do not meet the English Language requirements, they will be required to submit a formal English Language test result that meets the NMBA minimal requirements prior to program entry.

Requirements for professional experience placements

Practical experience is an integral component of the program and each student is required to undertake and satisfactorily complete 1240 hours of practical experience (1240 hours of professional experience placements).

Progression into practical courses is dependent upon a pass grade in theoretical and other practical courses which have been set as prerequisites.

Applicants must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app of Southern Queensland and Queensland Health/Tasmanian Health for Midwifery Practice Experience . Please refer to the applicable .

Commonwealth supported place

Program structure

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) comprises of 16 units/12 courses that all must be successfully completed to finish this degree. In particular, to graduate with the Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) students will be required to successfully complete:

• Midwifery practice experience courses by attending mandatory residential schools; and

• All unpaid/paid midwifery practice experience requirements of this degree through the midwifery practice experience courses
