Program objectives

On successful completion of the Master of Psychology (Clinical), students should be able to:

1. Critically analyse and apply an advanced working knowledge of the principles and practice of applied clinical psychology in order to set the foundations for lifelong learning.

2. Critically apply and synthesise current scientific literature with clinical information obtained from a diagnostic interview and psychometric testing; and apply these skills to deliver high quality clinical interventions to consumers with complex mental health needs.

3. Select, administer, synthesise a wide range of clinical psychology tests, and critically apply and report these findings in a clinical setting to a range of different audiences.

4. Utilise current knowledge in Evidence Based Practice to deliver a high level of individual and group clinical interventions.

5. Interact ethically with clients and other professionals from a range of cultural backgrounds, in keeping with code of ethics and inherent requirements, and apply these knowledge and skills proficiently in the workplace.

6. Conduct, evaluate and communicate systematic research relevant to Clinical Psychology.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPCL) (Commonwealth Supported Place)

• Completion of an Australian university four-year qualification in psychology accredited by the (APAC) within the last 10 years, with an upper second-class Honours (2A) or equivalent overall mark, as well as be eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia as a Provisional Psychologist. An exception to this Standard may be made for currently registered psychologists who can demonstrate current compliance with Registration Board CPD requirements seeking to gain a professional postgraduate qualification. Relevant prior professional experience and acquired skills will also be considered in the selection process through written application, references and an interview.

• English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 4.

Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPCF) (Full Fee paying)

• Completion of an Australian university two-year masters program accredited by the (APAC) or UniSQ's MPPS Master of Professional Psychology and internship year as well as full registration with the (AHPRA).

• English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 4.

• Places within this program are limited. Selection will be based on merit based selection process where applicants will be asked to address selection criteria in writing. If shortlisted, they will then be invited to attend an interview.

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a ¾«¶«´«Ã½app-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

Requirements for professional experience placements

Practicum experience is an integral component of the program and each student is required to accrue a minimum of 1000 hours of practicum experience, plus at least 180 hours of supervision from a registered psychologist who is an accredited supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia and holds clinical endorsement.

Program structure

The Master of Psychology (Clinical) consists of 16 units comprising 8 units of coursework, 4 units of practicum and a 4 unit thesis. Students may undertake either the:

• Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPCL) (Commonwealth Supported Place); or

• Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPCF) (Full Fee Paying).

The program is designed for full-time attendance in the on-campus mode. Once the first 8 courses (or equivalent) have been completed full-time there may be some flexibility to negotiate a part-time enrolment pattern for the remaining courses.

Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPCF) (Full Fee Paying)

The Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPCF) is designed for full-time or part-time attendance in the on-campus mode. The program contains 16 units of study tailored to the student’s entry qualification generally comprising of coursework and practicums with up to 8 units of credit given for the coursework and master project previously completed in the MPPS Master of Professional Psychology or previous Masters.

Likely required courses: depending on the approved courses, some semesters may only be available part-time. A tailored enrolment pattern should be negotiated with the Program Coordinator*.

Program completion requirements

Lectures for the coursework component of this program are given in full day mandatory workshops from one to two day duration over the semester. These mandatory workshops are normally held on weekdays.

Students who have achieved distinctions or better in Masters coursework courses, and successfully completed project proposal signed by their proposed thesis supervisor, will be permitted to apply for entry into the combined program.

Credit

Exemptions/credit for all specialisations will be assessed according to UniSQ procedure.

Up to eight units of coursework exemptions or credit will be granted in the Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPCF) (FFP) if the student has completed courses equivalent to courses offered in the Master of Psychology (Clinical) (MPCF) (FFP) in either:

• a 2-year APAC-accredited masters program, or

• MPPS Master of Professional Psychology and internship year.

Notes:

1. All requests for credits or exemptions need to be sought by the student and approved by the Program Coordinator (each student should expect to have a 1 hour interview with the program coordinator to confirm the structure of their program).

2. The Program Coordinator will deem to what extent prior studies are equivalent to the relevant specialisation and confirm the student’s required program structure.
