Professional accreditation

UniSQ is in the process of seeking accreditation of the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours with under the QUALIFYING classification. This is awarded to new Programs that are seeking accreditation for the first time and have not yet undergone accreditation. During this qualifying period, graduate cohorts are ineligible for Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) membership of Speech Pathology Australia. PROVISIONAL accreditation with conditions is awarded when a Program achieves accreditation for the first time leading to FULL ACCREDITATION.

Program aims

The Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) program provides students with a thorough preparation in the theoretical and clinical requirements of speech pathology practice in Australia (eligible for full membership of Speech Pathology Australia). The program enables students to become distinctive; as compassionate, holistic and competent early career graduates who are future-focussed and innovative, with well-developed clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills, a strong interprofessional focus and expertise in rural and regional practice.

Program objectives

  1. Demonstrate high levels of clinical competence to practice as a Speech Pathologist and thereby be eligible for membership with Speech Pathology Australia (SPA).

  2. Demonstrate high level communication skills, both written and verbal, in both professional and inter-personal contexts.

  3. Conduct practice tasks related to communication and swallowing with clients across the lifespan and in different contexts (e.g., rural) in an effective, safe and ethical manner.

  4. Take a whole person compassionate care approach to theoretical and clinical practice.

  5. Work effectively and creatively in multi and trans and inter-disciplinary teams in health and education settings.

  6. Critique and synthesise the literature, and critically reflect on ethics, and their own culture, values, and biases, to provide evidence-based, culturally safe care in a wide variety of settings.

  7. Contribute to the evidence base of the profession through the production of original research with some independence.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

This program is at AQF Qualification Level 08. Graduates at this level will have advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and/or further learning.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Have achieved a minimum Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 75, or equivalent qualification.^
  • English (Units 3 & 4, C); One of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Psychology (Units 3 & 4, C) or equivalent.

  • English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 6.


Meeting entry requirements does not guarantee admission. Places within the Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) are limited by quota.

All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a 精东传媒app-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

The 2023 ATAR and tertiary entrance ranks are based on agreed QTAC schedules which assess formal study at Year 12 or , tertiary, preparatory, professional or vocational qualifications or work experience, as detailed in the QTAC Assessment of Qualifications Manual and QTAC Assessor Guidelines.

Requirements for professional experience placements

Applicants must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the 精东传媒app of Southern Queensland and Queensland Health for practical placement. Please refer to the applicable Professional Practice Experience Handbook for Speech Pathology Students.

Mandatory Documents required prior to commencing clinical placement courses:

  • Blue Card or Working with Children Check

  • Yellow Card (if working with people with disabilities)

  • Australian Federal Police Check Certificate


All students must also provide the following immunisation evidence prior to commencing placements:

  • Hepatitis B immunisation evidence

  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella immunisation evidence

  • Varicella immunisation evidence

  • Pertussis immunisation evidence

  • Influenza immunisation evidence

  • Tuberculosis Risk Assessment

  • COVID-19 vaccinations as directed by health services


Other requirements:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)

  • First Aid Certificate

  • Clinical Uniform

Program structure

The program consists of 32 units; 17 discipline-specific, 12 service courses from aligned disciplines and two double weighted research courses. There are two Honours pathways with the opportunity for students with a GPA of 5 or above to complete an individual research project in their fourth year of study. Other students will complete a clinically-focussed Honours project based on a quality assurance project, in collaboration with local speech pathologists and service providers.
