Centre for Applied Climate Sciences

The Centre for Applied Climate Sciences helps people and organisations in Australia, Asia, the Pacific and beyond, to assess and manage the risks and opportunities they face from climate change, climate variability and both weather and climate extremes.

We work with our partners and communities to solve their climate-related problems by combining cutting-edge research and practical applications in climate and meteorological science with agricultural, mining and energy, tourism, hydrological, health, ecosystem, value chain, and economic modelling.

Project Aim: To directly engage with producers to assess the application and potential benefits of emerging opportunities aimed at building a more resilient and environmentally sustainable agricultural sector which will allow growers to diversify their income streams and smooth year-to-year variability linked to climate-related risk by accessing markets that provide financial rewards for increasing vegetive and soil carbon sequestration, as well as other potential environmental credit options.

Title: Filling fundamental gaps in pasture in drought-impacted savanna woodlands
Leader:
Project Partners:
Project Aims: To fill gaps in knowledge of competition for water between trees and grasses to enable graziers to better manage areas with woody vegetation while adapting to Queensland’s drought prone and highly variable climate.

Title: DeRISK SE Asia
Leader:
Project Team: | | | | Dr Louis Kouadio | |
Project Partners: | Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists
Project Aims: To develop climate risk management systems, best practices and insurance products that will shield smallholder farmers and businesses engaged in producing coffee, sugar, rice, cassava, rubber, dairy, and grazing across the agricultural value chain in key SE Asia countries from physical and financial disaster associated with climate change.
