Animal Ethics Review

All items involving animals for scientific purposes must be submitted to the Ethics Office for processing.

  • New applications must be submitted using the in Ethics Monitor.
  • To amend or report on existing approvals (prior December 2022), please continue to use the word-based forms and email to the Ethics Office.

The Ethics Office will review the item to ensure key information is contained, and any supporting documents have been attached. The item will then be referred to the appropriate review pathway, and you will receive an email confirming the review pathway.

All new submissions must be reviewed by the UniSQ AEC; this can include (not limited to);

  • Research applications
  • Teaching applications
  • Major amendment requests
  • Standard Operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Milestone reports

Refer to the UniSQ AEC meeting dates for information on submission timelines.

The UniSQ AEC has established a UniSQ AEC Executive, as per the Code; the UniSQ AEC has delegated for the Executive to review minor amendments. The UniSQ AEC may also delegate other items to be reviewed by the UniSQ AEC Executive.

For example, an application that receives a "Subject to modifications" outcome at a UniSQ AEC meeting - the UniSQ AEC will generally delegate the UniSQ AEC Executive to review and approve the revised submission.

The UniSQ AEC Chair may provide review and advice outside of a UniSQ AEC meeting. The UniSQ AEC may also delegate items for the UniSQ AEC Chair to review.

An item reviewed by the UniSQ AEC will receive one of the following outcomes:

  • Approved – with standard conditions
  • Approved – with standard and additional conditions
  • Subject to modifications (previously "Conditional approval") – this outcome includes written feedback for addressing and/or defending. The revised application and response to feedback will
  • generally be reviewed by the UniSQ AEC Executive or UniSQ AEC Chair.
  • Not approved (Re-submission permitted) – this outcome includes written feedback for addressing and/or defending with the revised application and response to be resubmitted to a future UniSQ
  • AEC meeting for review.
  • Not approved (Re-submission not permitted) – this outcome includes written feedback; however, a new application is required to be submitted to the UniSQ AEC if the research is to proceed.
