Andrew was working in engineering and noticed that the industry was adopting data-driven approaches to decision making – it made him wonder about postgraduate study.
“I had always enjoyed number crunching and developing intelligent systems to solve problems, undertaking studies in mathematics and statistics seemed like the right move,” he said.
When deciding where to study, flexible learning and being able to study online were key criteria for Andrew.
“I work full-time and am raising a young family, I needed the flexibility that online learning offered,” he said.
When he discovered that UniSQ’s Master of Science was offered online, Andrew enrolled and quickly found his passion.
“After completing my first few courses in statistics I became fascinated by data analysis and statistical modelling, since then I’ve continued to take as many statistics courses as possible.
“The academic staff in mathematics, physics, and computing were incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, and passionate about their subjects.
“For my final research project, I was able to work directly with academics at UniSQ, applying statistical modelling techniques in an agro-ecological context which ultimately led to publishing a research article in a Q1 journal,” said Andrew.
As an engineer, Andrew is now reaping the rewards of all his hard work.
“My postgraduate studies gave me the foundational knowledge and skills to be able to apply statistical thinking and decision making to my everyday work. The Master of Science has allowed me to specialise in an emerging field of engineering.”
