Students will require access to e-mail and have internet access to UConnect for this course. Students are required to attend a mandatory on campus residential school held during the Semester.

Rationale

As Students undertaking AEPP come from diverse backgrounds this course provides an introduction to the culture and practices of a university community. The course focuses on developing the skills, knowledge and attributes required to engage effectively with university systems, discourses, policies and processes, and to self-manage learning in a university context. This course also supports students to develop the communicative competencies required to actively participate in higher education. The course aims to prepare students for transition from a school to a university environment. This course contains a mandatory residential school.

Synopsis

Students will progress through a course which requires them to explore and respond to aspects of the university community relevant to their role as new students. They will investigate issues relevant to the context of higher education, engage in career development and planning and undertake tasks related to self-management, including goal setting, time management and planning. Learning in this course will focus on participation in practical, authentic activities relevant to beginning university study. This course contains a mandatory residential school.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Engage successfully with university systems, processes, discourses, policies and practices relevant to first year study.
  2. Apply skills, knowledge and attributes necessary to self-manage in an academic community.
  3. Correctly use a wide range of textual features in a range of communication modes and genres.
  4. Use basic mathematics skills and knowledge required as a foundation to succeed in a university environment.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
    Students must attend the mandatory residential school workshops scheduled for this course.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete the residential school attendance and participation satisfactorily students must achieve 100% for the item. To satisfactorily complete the remaining assessment items a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4).

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S3 2020 are: To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course and must have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Proficiency), i.e. a student must receive 100% (one mark) for attendance and participation at the scheduled residential school.

    Requirements after S3 2020:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), must have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Proficiency), i.e. a student must receive 100% (one mark) for attendance and participation at the scheduled residential school, and must have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the marks available for that assessment item.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S3 2020 are: An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.

    Requirements after S3 2020:
    RESTRICTED: Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are:
    1. writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination);
    2. any scientific calculator
    3. Students whose first language is not English, may, take an appropriate unmarked non electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.
    4. All students may take a non-electronic dictionary into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted.
