Rationale

This course is the final of four clinical placement courses designed for students seeking a career as medical laboratory technicians or medical laboratory scientists. This course provides students with opportunities to apply their theoretical knowledge of clinical biochemistry, transfusion science, histopathology, haematology and/or medical microbiology and acquire new practical skills in a clinical environment supported by a team of laboratory professionals.

Synopsis

This course provides students with an opportunity to apply their specialised theoretical knowledge in a real world clinical setting in preparation for future employment in a pathology laboratory. Students undertaking this clinical placement will gain organisational, time management and practical skills as they observe and participate in the day-to-day running of an analytical pathology department. This course encourages a reflective approach to the development of the students' workplace skills and will enable the student to make valuable professional connections with laboratory staff, potentially enhancing their future employment prospects.

Students intending to enrol in this course should communicate with the professional placements office well in advance of the first week of the semester so that the process of arranging a suitable placement with a pathology provider can begin. This course is offered in S1.

The normal workload for this course is attendance of 17 days per semester. The details of the clinical placement are negotiated by the professional placements officer to suit the student's requirements and the pathology provider's capacity to accommodate the student.

1. Pathology Clinical placements
Pathology clinical placements are an integral component of the Bachelor of Health (Medical Laboratory Science) program. The Pathology Clinical Placements enable students to gain practical experience in a workplace setting. However, as this is a clinical workplace setting students must be aware of the privacy and confidentiality issues that are associated with working in such an environment. Students undertaking pathology clinical placements must undertake Queensland Health Orientation training and sign deeds relating to placement requirements and privacy. The Students will be provided with a comprehensive clinical placements guide upon enrolment.

Objectives

On completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. perform analytical procedures in specific disciplines of pathology and make positive contributions to workflow in the clinical pathology laboratory;
  2. employ organisational and time-management skills and make a positive contribution to the goals of the organisation;
  3. utilise discipline specific laboratory skills to work independently and collaboratively as an effective member of a professional team;
  4. employ a reflective approach to professional development, and enhanced professional written and verbal workplace communication skills;
  5. demonstrate safe work practices, perform quality control and quality assurance procedures and demonstrate employ professional and ethical laboratory practices.

  2. Must be successfully completed no later than 3 weeks prior to the commencement of clinical placement
  3. Students must complete all lab sessions (17 Days) to be able to complete the Reflective Diary and must also submit their completed and signed Clinical Placement Workbook

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures and tutorials) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. This course contains a mandatory 127.5 hours clinical placement.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete each of the assignments satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each assignment. To complete the Reflective Diary students must attend 17 days of laboratories.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks available for the quiz, attend the mandatory clinical placement and achieve 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. To be assured of receiving a passing grade in this course, a student must obtain at least 50% of the marks awarded for the Reflective Diary and Workbook and 50% of the total weighted marks for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    All students who satisfy the requirements of the course will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Fail grade or an incomplete grade.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    There will be no Deferred or Supplementary examinations in this course.
