Rationale
Applications in Medical Biotechnology provides students with an opportunity to learn advanced practical biomedical sciences skills necessary to support their activity in a working laboratory or research setting. Students will further augment their theoretical knowledge in biomedical sciences with practical skills in molecular biology, cell biology and microbiology. This course will allow students to further enhance their learning by the application of the theoretical concepts and skills in a simulated research laboratory setting.
Synopsis
Medical Biotechnology is the application of all of the biomedical science disciplines to produce a diagnostic, prognostic, preventative or treatment for disease. This second capstone course allows students to further develop their technical, quantitative and analysis skills in the biomedical science laboratory. These skills are necessary for students moving into graduate biomedical science careers or further research study.
This course contains a mandatory residential school.
Objectives
On the completion of this course the student should be able to:
- Use a range of molecular biology, cell biology, immunology and microbiology-based laboratory techniques;
- Perform laboratory experiments safely and successfully with appropriate equipment, including molecular and conventional microbiological apparatus, computer software and hardware for data acquisition and analysis;
- Apply skills required for the preparation and presentation of a detailed research poster.

Attendance requirements:
Students must attend the mandatory residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. To maximize their chances of satisfying the objectives of the practical component of the course, students should attend and actively participate in the laboratory sessions in the course. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks or a grade of at least C-. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to be awarded a passing grade in this course. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle) and must have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Proficiency), i.e. the research poster and oral presentation (assignment 3) by achieving at least 50% of the marks available for that assessment item.
Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.
To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2). -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course. -

As part of the mandatory residential school, students may be expected to complete a combination of laboratories, practical classes and assessment as advised by the course examiner.

Students should be aware that the originality of any submitted assignment will be checked by the USQ service, "Turnitin". An originality index must be generated and will be checked - an acceptable Turnitin similarity index is <15%.

In order to attend laboratory classes, students must provide and wear appropriate personal protective equipment. This shall include a laboratory coat, closed in shoes, and safety glasses. Such equipment must be approved by supervising staff. Failure to provide and wear the appropriate safety equipment will result in students being excluded from classes.
