Rationale

This course will allow the student to choose a topic approved by the Program Coordinator from within a biomedical science discipline and obtain advanced knowledge by private study. The topic chosen should complement the studies that the student is simultaneously undertaking.

Synopsis

The student will be expected to gain knowledge in a selected field of biomedical science by private study in appropriate libraries and or electronic sources. Attendance at seminars both within and outside the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app will also be expected.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of a major area of biomedical science at an advanced level;
  2. demonstrate a capacity to perform investigative literature searches;
  3. demonstrate an capacity to perform critical analysis of literature searched;
  4. demonstrate a capacity to synthesise and present a substantive report on literature searched in a logical and coherent manner.

  1. Attendance requirements:
    The special study in biomedical science area chosen will be assigned after consultation with the examiner and the Program Coordinator. Students may be directed to a certain Biomedical science study, or they may be asked to nominate an appropriate study. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all relevant activities recommended or scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Students will be advised with a marking scheme and submission requirements.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

In consultation with the program Coordinator, Examiners will provide students with: (i) A topic for the Literature Review; (ii) Requirements for candidates for completion of the Literature Review so as to enable the student to reach the course objectives (iii) A marking scheme (iv) Any other requirements deemed necessary by the Examiner (v) Due date
