Rationale
This course is designed to be a self颅-directed and independent work which brings together the knowledge and skills students have acquired from the other courses in the Information System Development major. Emphasis is placed on a student's ability to demonstrate the application of project management, self learning, and teamwork and communication knowledge and skills in the development of a business information team project. This course extends the skills and knowledge learned to apply them in redevelopment of a Java 2EE based solution and related technologies in a team project.
Synopsis
Students will be working on an existing web based solution which must be completed in a team project. The project will need to be extended and redesigned to meet the new objectives of the organisation. As in the real world situation the project will be at undetermined stage of completion with a list of improvements and additional capabilities required to be implemented. The students will be expected to organise themselves and their time in order to learn the technologies utilised within the project explore other solutions and ultimately (with consultation) make decisions regarding the most appropriate technology to implement the redesign. Each student will demonstrate a higher level of understanding towards project management through development of requirements definition, and involvement in project planning, and control. Each student will also need to demonstrate a capacity to work successfully in a team project , and advanced written and verbal communication skills in a team project.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- demonstrate advanced written and oral communication skills by preparing and presenting professional documentation that is tailored to a specific audience
- demonstrate understanding of advanced programming and design techniques in developing distributed business enterprise systems
- apply the appropriate planning and problem-solving skills required for the successful completion of a business systems project
- demonstrate an understanding of technologies used in J2EE Enterprise applications (such as JSF, JSP, XML, DOM, StAX, JAX-RS, JAX-WS, SAX, SOAP, EJB, RPC, JMS, JNDI, JMS)
- demonstrate creativity, initiative, and enterprise by translating the problem into a solution (enterprise web application) that is efficient, economic, smart, and easily maintainable, and complies with the course material and specified Java 2EE software installations
- demonstrate the ability to create, manage, and distribute robust, reliable, secure, and user-friendly component-based enterprise applications to provide business solutions in a multi-tier web based enterprise system
- demonstrate the capacity to work successfully with others as part of a team to plan and deliver a project.

Attendance requirements:
