Rationale

A need has been recognised nationally and within this university for sound written academic communication skills prior to degree entry. The English Language program of the Open Access College focuses on strategies that develop independent assignment writing habits. International students and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (CALD) students, whose learning strategies have previously been acquired in languages other than English, may need to adapt their previous knowledge to the range of performance strategies in written communication skills expected by higher education institutions in Australia.
Writing to Learn focuses on the many processes needed for successful academic written communication. The course complements the other courses that form the EAPII offering. EAP7320 prepares students for future degree studies.

Synopsis

In the course students analyse an assignment question and follow a series of steps towards writing an essay. Written texts will be analysed to develop academic literacies. Students will learn techniques to engage in written academic arguments whilst also increasing their information literacy skills.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  2. show an understanding of critical thinking and academic information literacy by skilful analysis of written texts. (Assignment 1, 2,Test)
  3. display a suitable organisation of ideas and write an essay in an appropriate academic style (Assignment 2, Test).
  4. deploy a variety of academic communication skills related to the requirements of and audience for specific tasks (Assignment 1, 2,Test).

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4).

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 50% of the marks available for that assessment item.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    CLOSED: Candidates are allowed to bring only writing and drawing instruments into a closed examination.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held during the next examination period. A supplementary exam may be awarded, at the discretion of the Examiner, to students who do not pass the final exam. It is expected that such students have gained at least 45% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
