Rationale
Literature is one of three interrelated strands of the Australian Curriculum: English. Understanding the historical, social, and cultural perspectives of our literary traditions, as well as developing a broad knowledge of the range and genres of children’s literature, from historical and contemporary perspectives, provides a critical and informed approach to the selection and integration of children’s literature in educational contexts.
Synopsis
This course will explore the selection and use of children's literature to enrich the educational experience of diverse literacies learners. The development of children's literature from historical through to contemporary genres will be studied. Investigation and analysis will be conducted to explore the value of literary texts, including wide reading from a range of picture books, novels for beginning and independent readers. Pedagogical strategies for engaging diverse learners through the use of quality literature will also be explored.
Objectives
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership’s (AITSL) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST). On successful completion of this course pre-service educators should be able to:
- create literature rich environments for children (APST 2.1, 2.6, 3.4);
- know where to look for, and how to select quality children’s literature (APST 2.1, 2.6, 3.4);
- devise a literary pathway to source literature with related literary themes (APST 2.1, 2.6, 3.4);
- identify and analyse the literary devices used in picture books (APST 2.1, 3.4);
- investigate literature and the issues portrayed, through engagement with a variety of texts (APST 2.1, 3.4);
- demonstrate an understanding of the many genres and formats in children's literature (APST 2.1, 2.6, 3.4);
- demonstrate competence in, and appropriate use of, language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and referencing.
