Rationale

This course requires students with the opportunity to design, conduct and report a significant research project to be assessed by external examiners as warranting the award of the Doctor of Education qualification. It requires students to demonstrate the capacity to integrate empirical, methodological and theoretical knowledge at an advanced level in ways that relate to and contribute to current professional knowledge and practices in contemporary educational settings.

Synopsis

Part-time candidates should enrol in this course for each semester of the dissertation/folio component of the Doctor of Education program. This will normally be for a total of eighteen units. If two electives are included in the program pathway, students will normally enrol in 16 units. It is expected that the following elements will normally be completed by students working in close consultation with their supervisors: For students preparing a DISSERTATION - Writing and presenting a confirmation proposal; If appropriate, conducting a pilot or small-scale study; Collecting and analysing data; Writing successive versions of the chapters constituting the dissertation. For students preparing a FOLIO - Writing and presenting a confirmation proposal; Conducting and writing a formal research report; Writing an analytical thematic statement; Completing one or two other components as required for the folio.

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. apply advanced research principles and practices to professional educational contexts;
  2. critically interpret and apply knowledge from published research to professional practice;
  3. select and apply appropriate research methods to conduct an independent research project;
  4. make a significant and original contribution to knowledge in the context of professional practice;
  5. communicate understandings about published research and the findings of own research;
  6. demonstrate competence in appropriate use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and bibliographic referencing.

  1. Candidates who have not submitted their Dissertation must submit a Progress Report in each semester of enrolment. The Office of Research and Higher Degrees will notify candidates by email when the Progress Report is due.

  1. Attendance requirements:
    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to maintain regular contact with their supervisory team to discuss their research progress.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Progress Reports: To complete the Progress Report satisfactorily, students must fill out the report in consultation with their supervisor. As part of their research program, students are expected to demonstrate satisfactory progress.
    Dissertation: To successfully complete a Dissertation, students must receive a passing grade and have undertaken the requested revisions.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Progress Report: HDR students must submit a progress report and be deemed to be making Ongoing progress by the supervisor and ADR to receive a ONG grade.
    Dissertation: At the end of the candidature students are required to submit a dissertation for examination, receive a passing grade and satisfactorily address the revisions for the degree to be awarded.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    Not applicable.
