Rationale

Teacher professional accreditation demands that secondary teaching graduates have a strong professional knowledge of discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies within chosen their teaching areas. Although there are some common pedagogical approaches across clusters of disciplines, there are also distinctive practices within specific disciplines. This course enables pre-service educators to develop specific knowledges and pedagogical understandings within the Business discipline.

Synopsis

The course begins with pre-service educators exploring specific pedagogies and knowledges related to Business. Building on this, they will then actively constructing their own pedagogical practice and develop professional expertise in delivering discipline specific teaching for learning. The purpose of this course is to move beyond generic approaches of teaching for learning to provide a deep understanding of how to teach in their Business discipline. This course provides the opportunity for pre-service educators to learn how Business content, pedagogy and curriculum fit and work together to provide effective learning opportunities.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of content selection and a wide range of teaching strategies to identify misconceptions in Business discipline;
  2. demonstrate an ability to identify Business discipline skills, attitudes, values, and code of conduct;
  3. demonstrate differentiate teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities in the Business discipline;
  4. demonstrate the ability to select, create and use relevant resources in the Business discipline (including ICTs);
  5. demonstrate an understanding of providing feedback, assessment and reporting on student achievement and apply well-developed judgement to student work in the Business discipline;
  6. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in the Business discipline;
  7. demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of maintaining student safety and compliance with legislative requirements in a range of contexts relevant for the Business discipline;
  8. engage with colleagues, professional teaching networks and broader communities to improve student learning in the Business discipline;
  9. demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and bibliographic referencing.
