Rationale

Teacher professional accreditation demands that secondary teaching graduates have a strong professional knowledge of discipline-specific curriculum and pedagogical studies within their chosen teaching areas. This course enables pre-service educators to develop specific knowledges and pedagogical understandings within the Languages discipline.

Synopsis

The course begins with pre-service educators exploring specific structures and knowledges related to their Languages teaching area. Building on this, they will then actively construct their own pedagogical practice and develop professional expertise in developing language specific skills for learning. The purpose of this course is to adapt approaches of teaching for learning to develop a deep understanding of language and cultural awareness in communicating and understanding within the Languages discipline. This course provides the opportunity for pre-service educators to learn how Languages content, pedagogy and curriculum fit and work together to provide effective learning opportunities.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership鈥檚 (AITSL) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST). On successful completion of this course pre-service educators should be able to:

demonstrate, select and plan authentic content and range of teaching strategies across the macroskills of speaking and listening, reading and writing, vocabulary development and grammar (APST 2.1, 2.2, 2.3);
identify discipline skills, attitudes, values, and intercultural competence within the Australian curriculum Languages (APST 1.2, 7.1);
differentiate individual aptitudes for language learning and use (APST 1.5, 1.6);
select, create and use relevant resources (including ICTs) in Languages education (APST 2.6, 3.4, 4.5);
provide formative feedback, summative assessment and reporting on student achievement and apply well-developed judgement to student work in the Languages (APST 2.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.5);
apply literacy and numeracy teaching strategies in the Language discipline (APST 2.5);
engage with colleagues, professional teaching networks and broader communities to enhance Languages education and student learning (APST 2.5).
