Rationale

Higher Education teaching takes place in a context that is rapidly evolving, challenging and complex. Effective teaching in this context requires the development of a personally meaningful, relevant professional knowledge base. It also requires the development of a critical, reflective capacity to evaluate and reformulate teaching practice and underlying assumptions. The professional knowledge and capacities required for effective teaching include conceptions and theories of learning and teaching, examination of different learner contexts, curriculum design and implementation, and evaluative and reflective practice.

Synopsis

This course provides higher education practitioners with the opportunity to explore meaningful learning and teaching issues within their own professional environment, from the perspective of their current and anticipated teaching role(s). Participants will reflect on their values, context and practice, and design and implement an evidence-based learning and teaching activity or artefact. Peer feedback and individual reflection will be used to evaluate this design and implementation process. NOTE: Learners undertaking this course are required to have access to learning and teaching environments in a higher education setting.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. The assessment item(s) that may be used to assess student achievement of an objective are shown in parenthesis. On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. examine theories and ethical dimensions of learning, teaching and curriculum design;
  2. find and evaluate research to inform identified issues in their practice;
  3. apply theory and practice to their context and diverse learner contexts, including that of Australian Indigenous peoples;
  4. scope, plan, design and implement a real-working learning and teaching artefact and collaboratively evaluate the work of themselves and their peers;
  5. communicate relevant ideas with colleagues in writing, via presentation or online;
  6. critically reflect on their values, context and practice to develop a professional enhancement plan.
