Other requisites

It is recommended that students will have successfully completed two other courses before enrolling in EDU5760.

Students cannot pass EDU5760 until they have successfully completed the sector-based Professional Experience component.

Students must be available for a specified period of time to undertake a supervised Professional Experience in an approved Education-related site during their enrolment in this course.

State law in Queensland (Australia) requires that all adults working/undertaking professional experience/researching with children under the age of 18, in the state of Queensland must hold a valid Blue Card OR Exemption Card
If undertaking placement outside of Queensland, it is the students鈥� responsibility to comply with the relevant working with children checks that are required for this jurisdiction, and provide evidence to the Professional Experience office

Rationale

There are many potential areas of study and workplace professional activity which offer significant opportunities for learning appropriate to postgraduate Education studies. In recognition of this situation, students enrolled in this course are able to undertake guided individual study of such an area in order to enhance their professional knowledge and practice in an area of specialist studies in Education relevant to their program of study and professional practice context. This course also requires students to undertake a supervised professional experience placement in an approved education or training setting.

Synopsis

Students enrolled in this course are able to undertake guided individual study of a topic of interest related to their own professional education context. Students will negotiate a project type with the Course Examiner and develop a detailed project Proposal in consultation with their appointed academic supervisor to address their specialised topic, issue or workplace challenge. By completing their nominated professional studies project, students will demonstrate their ability to undertake independent, scholarly work-related professional learning. In addition, students will demonstrate their professional practice via their successful completion of the embedded professional experience placement.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. The assessment item(s) that may be used to assess student achievement of an objective are shown in parenthesis. On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. conceptualise, design, implement and manage a professional study project to address their nominated topic, issue or workplace challenge in consultation with others (All Assignments);
  2. source and critically evaluate established theories and other creditable and scholarly information relevant to their project topic (All Assignments);
  3. critically analyse, interpret and synthesise such theories and information and reflect on their application to professional practices (All Assignments);
  4. communicate their interpretation, reflection and findings in a form suitable for dissemination to their professional peers (Assignment 2);
  5. apply quality written language and scholarly writing including correct spelling, grammar, and bibliographic referencing (All Assignments);
  6. transfer knowledge gained on Professional Experience into satisfactory levels of ethical and competent professional practice (Professional Experience).

  1. A mark of one (1) indicates you have passed the Professional Experience component. A mark of zero (0) indicates you have not passed the Professional Experience component. Professional Experience should be undertaken as per the following requirements: 1. Adult Professional and Workplace Learning specialisation are required to successfully complete 50 hours of supervised instruction in an approved adult learning setting 2. Early childhood specialisation are required to successfully attend 45 days professional experience in an approved early childhood/early learning setting, which may include the student's workplace, providing suitable supervision arrangements are in place. 3. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) specialisation and all other students are required to successfully complete 20 hours of professional experience in an approved setting.

  1. Attendance requirements:
    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete each of the assessment items satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each summative assessment item. The sector-based professional experience component must be successfully completed in order to pass the Professional Experience component.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course and satisfactorily complete the sector-based Professional Experience components.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course and successfully complete the sector-based Professional Experience component..
