Synopsis

The purpose of this practice course is to provide experimental support for level two of all internal programs and level three of all external programs in Electrical and Electronic, Computer Systems, Power Engineering, Instrumentation, Control and Automation Engineering. Engineering practice skills, such as the ability to perform practical and project work, innovation, problem identification and solution and engineering judgement will be developed as the student's progress through their program. The development of communication skills is also encouraged in the engineering practice courses. This practice course will also reinforce the learning of theory and develop observation and interpretation skills and to stimulate interest and develop self-confidence. The course provides equipment familiarisation and safety information for electrical measurement, microprocessor programming and PCB design.

This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes for on-campus students.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to (Note: objectives 5 to 11 relate to elective labs):

  1. select and use appropriate test equipment and procedures from a wide range of possibilities;
  2. analyse and interpret test results and measurements on electric circuits, in terms of theoretical models;
  3. predict the performance of electric circuits from device characteristics;
  4. design an electronic printed circuit board for a specific application using industry standard software;
  5. design and write programs to operate microprocessor hardware to perform particular tasks;
  6. create software to solve a specified problem, while working as part of a team;
  7. develop an understanding of either: telecommunications principles or power systems networks

  1. Students are required to complete all assigned laboratory/practical sessions and have their attendance record signed off by the supervisor. Students are also required to complete any activity worksheets for the lab sessions and show these to the supervisor before being signed off as competent in that lab. Students must submit a copy of their 'lab completion and competency' record by the due date. The submission process for this record will be detailed in the introductory/practical booklet.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    External students must attend the mandatory residential school and on-campus students must attend the mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Students must attend and complete the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety training program for this course before they are able to undertake any practical work in the electrical laboratories.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school or laboratory or practical class and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.
