Rationale
This course provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience with equipment and concepts associated with higher level electrical, electronic and computer systems courses. At the same time the course provides room to practice transferable skills such as teamwork and problem solving skills.
Synopsis
This is the final technical practice course for Bachelor of Engineering students majoring in Electrical and Electronic or Computer Systems Engineering. This course provides experimental work and project work in the areas of automatic electronic test equipment, applied control, computer systems, networking, Internet of Things and VoIP systems. The principle objectives are to allow the student to develop knowledge of techniques, apply theory and interact with phenomena in real situations, and further develop problem identification and solution skills together with a capacity for self-learning. A significant proportion of the course is devoted to group based project work.
This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes for on-campus students.
Objectives
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- evaluate a broad range of design criteria for typical electrical or electronic products;
- co-operate in a team environment to achieve objectives in a given timeframe;
- communicate results effectively to peers and prepare written reports;
- engage in informed discussions about equipment, activity design, experiment execution and results;
- devise, implement and evaluate test procedures on electronic devices using a graphical; programming language such as Labview, and automatic test equipment;
- design and test simple Internet of Things applications and evaluate their performance;
- design, implement and evaluate scripts to enable simple control tasks;
- to compile, install and configure VoIP PABX software under Linux to demonstrate the operation of a telephone system.

Important assessment information
-
Attendance requirements:
External students must attend the mandatory residential school and on-campus students must attend the mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Students must attend and complete the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety training program for this course before they are able to undertake any practical work in the electrical laboratories. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item. -
Penalties for late submission of required work:
Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4) -
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade. -
Examination information:
There is no examination in this course. -
Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
Not applicable. -
精东传媒app Student Policies:
Students should read the USQ policies: Definitions, Assessment and Student Academic Misconduct to avoid actions which might contravene 精东传媒app policies and practices. These policies can be found at .
Assessment notes
-
Students must familiarise themselves with the USQ Assessment Procedures (.
