Synopsis

Students must complete a minimum of 30 days of professional practice in their discipline field to be eligible to graduate from the Associate Degree of Engineering program. This work experience course is intended to enable students to document practical engineering and professional practice skills they acquire within the workplace. Work experience may be achieved in numerous ways ranging from roles as junior members of teams to tasks that form part of discrete engineering projects. This experience should enhance a student's ability to perform practical and project work, to be innovative, to solve problems and identify solutions, thereby developing engineering judgement. Students will prepare entries in their ePortfolio reflecting on how their work experience has contributed to the development of USQ Graduate Capabilities relevant to their engineering major. A diary with regular entries must be maintained and periodically certified by the work experience provider as a true and faithful record of the hours the student has completed.

The ePortfolio prepared for ENG2909 may be useful later in preparing the required documentation when applying to Engineers Australia for registration as a Chartered Engineering Officer.

Students are advised to contact the engineering placements team via engineering.placements@usq.edu.au if they have any questions about the process of finding and gaining approval for a placement.

Both on-campus and external students will be required to submit their ePortfolio and work diary electronically for review and assessment by the due date to permit timely assessment.

Important assessment information

1. Attendance requirements:
   
   It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities required of them by the work experience provider to maximize their chance of meeting the objectives of the course.
   
   
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   
   To complete the practical component satisfactorily, students must submit the nominated practical report and obtain a Pass standard in all of the major sections as described in the assessment scheme.
   
   
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
   
   Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)
   
   
4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   
   To be assured of receiving a passing grade in a course a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks for the course and obtain at least 50% of the available marks for the ePortfolio assessment item (Proficiency hurdle).
   
   
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   
   As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a
   passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade
   or an Incomplete grade.

Assessment notes

1. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner.
   
   
2. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be despatched to USQ within 24 hours if required by the Examiner.
   
   
3. In accordance with 精东传媒app Policy, the Examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.
   
   
4. All ECC reports and Diaries will be submitted electronically to the Faculty by both on-campus (Toowoomba and Springfield) and external students All required electronic submission must be made through the Assignment Drop Box located on the USQ 精东传媒app Desk for the course, unless directed otherwise by the examiner of the course. The due date for an electronically submitted assessment is the date by which a student must electronically submit the assignment. The assignment files must be submitted by 11.55pm on the due date using USQ time (as displayed on the clock on the course home page, that is, Australian Eastern Standard Time).
   
   
5. The Faculty will NOT normally accept submission of assessments by facsimile or email.
   
   
6. Students who do not have regular access to Internet services for electronic submission, or are otherwise disadvantaged by these regulations may be given special consideration. They should contact the examiner of the course to negotiate such special arrangements prior to the submission date.
   
   
7. Students who have undertaken all of the required assessments in a course but who have failed to meet some of the specified objectives of a course within the normally prescribed time may be awarded the temporary grade: IM (Incomplete - Make up). An IM grade will only be awarded when, in the opinion of the examiner, a student will be able to achieve the remaining objectives of the course after a period of non-directed personal study
   
   
8. Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment or to sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply to defer an assessment in a course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded IDS (Incomplete - Deferred Examination); IDM (Incomplete Deferred Make-up); IDB (Incomplete - Both Deferred Examination and Deferred Make-up).
   
   
9. To be assured of receiving a passing grade, students must be judged to have made a genuine effort to contribute to the work of the team, by other team members.
   
   
10. Harvard (AGPS) is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use Harvard (AGPS) style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The Harvard (AGPS) style to be used is defined by the USQ Library's referencing guide.

1. Students will normally enrol in the ENG2909 Work Experience - Associate course in the last year of the Associate Degree in Engineering program. However students are strongly encouraged to commence their work experience and related record keeping as early as possible in their program.
