Other requisites
For a Bachelor or Engineering Science (BENS) student to enter the engineering practice sub-plan pathway requires a minimum 5 years of wide-ranging relevant industrial experiences as an Engineers Australia (EA) registered Engineering Associate, or equivalent.
Rationale
The BENS engineering practice sub-plan pathway is designed to enable experienced engineering Associates to draw on their industrial experience to demonstrate their achievement of the required generic and technical capabilities to Engineers Australia Stage 2 experienced Technologist competency attributes. This course is the gateway course for two other BENS professional practice program courses: ENG3311 Technologist Work-Integrated Learning Project A and ENG3312 Technologist Work-Integrated Learning Project B. ENG3300 Industry Experience Evaluation Portfolio will enable students to assess their existing attributes and capabilities, and complete a technologist workplace e-portfolio to demonstrate their level of competency and professional achievement.
Synopsis
The focus of this gateway course ENG3300 is development of the student's professional engineering perspective and formation in professional engineering practice by a number of assignments to:
- Demonstrate professional competencies benchmarked to the EA stage 1 technologist, based on appropriate experiences.
- Develop and demonstrate the written communication skills that confirm the level of experience through the reflective writing of Career Episode Reports.
- Develop their BENS professional practice pathway plan to graduation.
- Develop and map their WIL report outlines to nominated BENS technical courses they wish to demonstrate their competency in. The demonstration of competency occurs in ENG3311 Technologist Work-Integrated Learning Project A and ENG3312 Technologist Work-Integrated Learning Project B if students continue in the engineering practice sub-plan pathway.
- Categorise and benchmark their industrial technologist experience to the broader discipline EA Stage 1 professional graduate engineer competency elements and attributes.
Objectives
On successful completion of this practice-based course students should be able to:
- Demonstrate that their experience is compliant to EA stage 1 Technologist Competencies.
- Develop their professional engineering reflective thinking by demonstrating their ability to write work integrated learning (WIL) based Engineering Competency Claims (ECCs) acceptable to both USQ and EA professional standards.
- Review their professional engineering WIL achievements to develop their pathway to graduation plan, including WIL Report abstracts to map their competency to the learning objectives of nominated BENS courses within the major. This is the planning element for potential additional course credits when undertaking ENG3311 and ENG3312.
- Articulate their WIL professional practice understanding of their competency as technologists to the broader discipline-wide technical and generic abilities of an EA Stage 1 Professional Engineer.
- Develop their engineering communications skills to a level suitable for producing their foundational engineering career e-portfolio for continuing professional development.

Attendance requirements:
There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students’ responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To complete assessment items satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each assessment item. A satisfactorily-completed assessment item will satisfy EA professional competency standards that underpin the engineering practice pathway. This is achieved by demonstrating the ability to write work integrated learning (WIL) reports in appropriate engineering discipline-based technical terms, and formatting the assignments to an appropriate professional practice standard. Feedback will be provided with the progressive assessments on the suitability, or otherwise, of associate engineering industrial experience (as recorded in the foundational engineering e-portfolio) to continue the plan of potential exemption from nominated course(s). Suitable experience will allow students to claim exemption from the nominated course(s) by demonstrated WIL in ENG3311 and ENG3312. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in the course. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade in a course a student must successfully atempt all assessment items, obtain at least 50% of the available marks for the final assessment portfolio and obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks for the course. To obtain at least 50% on the final assessment portfolio, students must have successfully completed all the previous assessment items, incorporating the relevant feedback in their final submission. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course. -
