Students must successfully complete this course before enrolling in ENG4903; students cannot enrol in ENG3902 and ENG4903 in the same semester. Students who will commence their final-year project (ENG4111, ENG8411, ENG8002, ENG8414) in Semester 1 should take this course in the preceding semester. Students who will commence their Masters project (ENG8411, ENG8002, ENG8414) in Semester 2 should take this course in the preceding year.

Rationale

This is the first of two courses which address the practice of professional engineering and professional spatial science. The course is concerned largely with non-technical matters, independent of the specific disciplines, which involve the particular work undertaken, performance and responsibilities borne by the professional engineer and spatial scientist. The major manifestation of this professional practice is the participation in professional development activities and the planning, execution and reporting of project work. Part of this course is directed at the preparation for the commencement of your final year research project.

Synopsis

This course focuses on a range of generic, transferable skills, rather than specific technical skills. Most activities are not discipline-specific and activities include consulting with supervising staff, a lecture and attendance at the annual "Project Conference" in which ENG4903 Professional Practice 2 students present their completed project work to other students, staff and members of various professions. Students will also participate in, and report on, a range of laboratory sessions, demonstrations, seminars and workshops provided by staff of the Faculty, the wider university and by industry representatives. Students are required to choose and self-organise the completion of similar activities off campus. These professional development activities seek to provide the student with insights into the "cutting edge" of current engineering and surveying practice.

This course contains a mandatory residential school for both external and on-campus students.

1. Attendance requirements:
   
   External and on-campus students must attend the mandatory residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
   
   
2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
   
   To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item.
   
   
3. Penalties for late submission of required work:

4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
   
   To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item.
   
   
5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
   
   As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.

3. As part of the mandatory residential school, students may be expected to undertake a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratories, practical classes and assessment as advised by the course examiner.
   
   
4. This is a communication benchmark course and a major component of the assessment of this course will be associated with the demonstration of communication skills.
   
   
5. A minimum standard of communication skills must be demonstrated in order for a passing grade to be awarded.
   
   
6. A student will not normally undertake this course until their last four (4) semesters of the degree course AND is commencing or expecting to commence final-level project work (ENG4111 Research Project Part 1 or ENG8411 Masters Dissertation B) in the following academic year.
   
   
7. Participation in the Project Conference is preparatory to, and additional to, presentation of a paper at this conference in the following year.
