Rationale
This course is part of a supervised research project which provides opportunities for motivated and highly qualified students to undertake advanced study and to produce a research-based thesis. Students develop the appropriate research skills and specialist knowledge which will enhance their career prospects or allow them to undertake further studies. The emphasis of the programme is on developing the appropriate knowledge and skills to undertake independent research and professional practice.
Synopsis
Full time research in engineering or surveying under the supervision of selected staff members.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course students will have:
- demonstrated their ability to proceed with the research topic
- demonstrated their ability to think analytically, critically and creatively about a chosen research topic and related issues within the area of specialisation chosen
- demonstrated competence in each component of quantitative or qualitative research processes viz; identification and analysis of research problems, formulation of research aims, research questions and/or hypotheses, selection of appropriate research methodology and method, effective application of ethical research procedures, collection of relevant data, appropriate analysis of data, suitable interpretation/discussion of data, and formulation of appropriate conclusions and recommendations for research and/or practice

Attendance requirements:
It is the student鈥檚 responsibility to attend regular meetings with the supervisory team to discuss their research progress. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
Progress Reports: to complete the Progress Report satisfactorily, students must fill out the report in consultation with their supervisor. As part of their research program, students are expected to demonstrate satisfactory progress.
Thesis: To successfully complete a Thesis, students must receive a passing grade and have undertaken the requested revisions. -

Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4) -
Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
Progress Report: HDR students must submit a progress report and deemed to be making Satisfactory Progress by the supervisor and ADR to receive a SP grade.
Thesis: At the end of the candidature students are required to submit a thesis for examination, receive a passing grade and satisfactorily address the revisions for the degree to be awarded. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
As SP is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of SP. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an incomplete grade. -
