Rationale

Confidence with using the English language is built upon students being provided with the opportunity to be challenged with tasks that scaffold their learning allowing them to build confidence through being provided with support whilst encountering increasingly challenging activities.
This course aims to develop students' language skills and strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking to a level where they can apply their language skills to longer, more complex material and tasks that help build confidence and prepare students to proceed to Pre-Intermediate Level.

Synopsis

In this course, reading, writing, listening and speaking have been organised around skills that students need to develop at this level. Students develop language skills and expressions related to areas of immediate relevance, such as information about family, career, shopping, leisure activities, health and basic information about country of origin. Communication tasks centre on simple and routine tasks that require a simple and direct exchange of information with a focus on the familiar and routine. Directed self-study at the appropriate level aims at continuing to develop students' ability to work independently of the teacher on individual problems and needs.

Objectives

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply reading and writing skills to allow an understanding and response to basic English texts.
  2. Further their abilities to listen to spoken English and understand key ideas.
  3. Formulate a range of introductory approaches to participate in basic English conversations.
  4. Understand the importance of asking questions to improve the understanding of spoken and written material.
  5. Develop the ability to recognise areas of English which need improvement and strategies that will help achieve this.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    Students are required to attend at least 80% of the scheduled class sessions and ensure their attendance is registered with the staff member in charge of the activity. An exception to this attendance level may be made by the university where the student can produce documentary evidence that clearly demonstrates compassionate and compelling circumstances. In this case attendance of at least 70% of the scheduled class sessions will be acceptable. It is the students' responsibility to access information regarding course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Refer to statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course. All assessment items must be received prior to the start of the examination period for the intake in which the course is offered. Students may be required to re-submit an assessment piece that is unsatisfactory.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4).

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the reading and writing tests by achieving at least 50% of the marks available for that assessment item.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an incomplete grade.

  6. Examination information:
    Closed Examination: Candidates are allowed to bring only writing and drawing instruments into the closed examination.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held at the end of each intake.
