Rationale

As with the learning of any language, as confidence with the English language grows, it is important that students are provided with the opportunity to be challenged with more difficult tasks. This course aims to further develop students' language skills and strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking to a level where they can apply their language skills to longer, more complex material and tasks that help build confidence and prepare students to proceed to the Intermediate Level.

Synopsis

The Pre-Intermediate course presents different themes such as work, leisure, daily routines, holidays, geography, health and culture around which a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are introduced and practised. The four macro skills are developed through role play and information gap questionnaires, pronunciation, dictation, listening for gist, specific information and detail, skimming, scanning, and reading for gist and detail, writing sentences and paragraphs. Directed self-study at the Pre-Intermediate level consolidates and extends students' ability to become more autonomous learners.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
Students are required to attend at least 80% of the scheduled class sessions and ensure their attendance is registered with the staff member in charge of the activity. An exception to this attendance level may be made by the university where the student can produce documentary evidence that clearly demonstrates compassionate and compelling circumstances. In this case attendance of at least 70% of the scheduled class sessions will be acceptable. It is the students' responsibility to access information regarding course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
Refer to statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course. All assessment items must be received prior to the start of the examination period for the intake in which the course is offered. Students may be required to re-submit an assessment piece that is unsatisfactory.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4).

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:

Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).

This system should be used by students to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The Harvard (APGS) style to be used is defined by the USQ library's referencing guide. This guide can be found at

Evaluation and benchmarking

In meeting the 精东传媒app's aims to establish quality learning and teaching for all programs, this course monitors and ensures quality assurance and improvements in at least two ways. This course:

  2. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in this course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills.
