Rationale
Practice courses seek to develop basic competencies and attributes commensurate with the intuitive and professional skills sought in engineering graduates. This course provides a broad introduction to the practical aspects of water engineering and focuses on the development of analytical, manual, diagnostic, communication and group interaction skills.
Synopsis
This course covers a range of experimental activities in the area of Hydraulics. Students will conduct testing and experimental work in a team environment in the Laboratory and/or remotely via internet access. Students will then analyse and present the subsequent results on an individual basis. Laboratory sessions provide for a better understanding of relevant theory and calibration techniques for flow measuring devices through hands on experience.
This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory on-campus laboratories for on-campus students.
Objectives
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course students will be able to:
- conduct experiments to verify common fundamental principles relating to fluid statics and fluid flow in pipelines and channels;
- analyse and present experimental data to a suitable engineering standard.
- demonstrate an appreciation of appropriate safety procedures and workplace health and safety requirements;
- work effectively as a member, participating in completing tasks, and supporting others in achievement of team goals;
- undertake critical self-review and performance evaluation against course objectives as a primary means of tracking personal development needs and achievements.

Attendance requirements:
External students must attend the mandatory residential school and on-campus students must attend the mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item. -

As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who have qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Fail grade or an incomplete grade. -
