Rationale

The suite of eight Practice meets Theory courses create the structure around which the four-year Education Degree is developed. There are opportunities to connect to real-world teaching contexts through observations of teaching practice and theoretical knowledge in a carefully sequenced approach to developmental needs. In first year Practice meets Theory coursework the focus is on introducing pre-service teachers to the profession and beginning the process of thinking and acting like a teacher.

Synopsis

This is the first of a suite of eight Practice meets Theory courses that affords pre-service teachers the opportunities to connect to real-world teaching contexts, scaffolding their development toward graduate teacher capabilities. Coursework enables pre-service teachers to begin thinking and acting like a teacher. This first year first semester introductory course requires pre-service teachers to review recordings of contemporary teachers at work. Specifically, pre-service teachers will focus on the micro-skills of teaching (gaining attention, eye contact, positioning, timing, delivering instructions, supervising learning activities, questioning, using a whiteboard, etc) that are embedded in the coursework and observation tasks.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership’s (AITSL) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST). On successful completion of this course pre-service teachers should be able to:

  1. identify and apply professional conduct for teaching (APST 7.1, 7.2);
  2. observe the use of classroom communication, applications of ICT, teaching strategies and resources in context to manage and sequence classroom activities (APST 3.3, 3.4, 3.5);
  3. support student participation by observing and discussing the skills a teacher uses to develop rapport with learners (APST 4.1, 4.2);
  4. initiate the application of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to enable a continuous personal professional learning approach to pre-service training as an acknowledgement of the implications this has for student learning and the ongoing development of the pre-service teacher (APST 6.1, 6.4).

Assessment notes

  1. Referencing in assignments must comply with the APA referencing system. This system should be used by students to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The APA style to be used is defined by the USQ library's referencing guide. This guide can be found at .

  2. Students are required to demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of academic language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and referencing in all assessment responses. Marks allocated to the aforementioned criteria will be specified in the criteria for assessment of all assessment items.

  3. Students are required to submit ALL assignments to evidence meeting or exceeding the mandatory requirements of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs).
