Rationale
The ability to process and analyse geospatial data at an advanced level is essential for Spatial Science and Planning professionals. Higher-level knowledge and skills in the use of software and hardware, as well as the competence to apply geoprocessing tools, will ensure that analysts, planners and managers can make informed decisions. The aim of the course is to equip students with skills in advanced GIS and remote sensing, and their applications to urban and regional planning, environmental management, agriculture, engineering, land and resource management, etc.
Synopsis
The course will cover advanced topics in the analysis and applications of spatial data for planning and management. It will further build the students' competency in the use of industry-standard software and hardware in spatial science, particularly on geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing. The delivery will focus on the hands-on approach and applications-oriented project done in an inter-disciplinary group that will cover urban and regional planning, environmental management, agriculture, engineering, land and resource management, etc.
This course contains a mandatory residential school.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- use geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing software and hardware by applying key geo-spatial concepts and principles across a range of targeted case studies at an advanced level of cognitive and technical skill;
- apply software and hardware skills, as well as knowledge of planning concepts and methods, to process geospatial and non-spatial data for decision-making, planning, and management to an advanced level exercising independent initiative and judgment within diverse urban contexts;
- present project results at an advanced level of communication and presentation skills to a variety of audiences;
- work within a team to cogently and coherently apply systematic approaches for the conduct and management of spatial science projects in an urban context;
- demonstrate an appreciation of appropriate safety procedures and workplace health and safety requirements.

Attendance requirements:
Students must attend the mandatory residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all materials provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item. -

As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade. -
