Pre-requisite: Students must be enrolled in one of the following Programs: DPHD or MNRS or MNSG or MOHH

Other requisites

Students must have completed a minimum of 6 courses in the MNSG or MOHH including
HSC8050 Research Methodology for the Human Sciences before commencing this course, or be enrolled in a higher degree by research Program.

Rationale

Professionals from all disciplines need to be knowledgeable and critical consumers of research, including the research design process. This course provides students with the knowledge and guidance to develop a research proposal that is inclusive of ethical requirements within their field. This proposal will be implemented either by enrolling in HSC8070 Masters Project A and HSC8080 Masters Project B or through a Higher degree by research

Synopsis

With guidance from a member of academic staff as their supervisor, students will plan and design an independent research or evaluation project which relates to their overall program of study.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. plan and design an independent research /evaluation project focused on a topic of significance in the student's field of study.
  2. comply with the ethical standards as outlined in the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2018) and associated guides.

    There is one assessment item in this course. To satisfactorily complete the assessment for this course a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for the assessment. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course.

    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total marks available for the each component of the assessment in the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grade for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the assessment items in the course.

Assessment notes

  1. Students must familiarise themselves with the USQ Assessment Procedures (.

The due date for an electronically submitted assessment is the date by which a student must electronically submit the assignment irrespective of holidays. The assignment files must be submitted by 11.55pm on the due date using USQ time (as displayed on the clock on the course home page; that is, Australian Eastern Standard Time).

Note that assignments may have to be accompanied by a 'Turnitin' Originality Report which the student has to download from the Turnitin website at after submitting their assignment to the Turnitin database online. Details will be provided with the assignment requirements. Failure to attach the Originality Report may result in loss of marks.

Students should use APA style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. Evaluation and benchmarking
