Rationale
An important outcome of Masters level study is that learners should be able to design and execute independent projects that consolidate, build upon and/or apply the capabilities developed through their program of study in their workplace. This course, taken at, or towards the end of the program, is part of a 'capstone experience' that enables students to synthesise the knowledge and skills developed in earlier courses of their program into an approved research project focused on a key aspect of their interest or specialisation. The independent project is commenced in HSC8070 and completed in HSC8080
Synopsis
This is the first of two courses that contribute towards the Nursing Masters Project. HSC8070 and HSC8080 must be taken in consecutive semesters. With guidance from a member of academic staff as supervisor, the student will plan and design an independent [research or evaluation] project which relates to their overall program of study. The project will lead to the preparation of a substantial written report presented at an appropriate scholarly standard. This report may be in the format of a paper for publication in an approved academic or professional journal. Project reports must reflect mastery of the content of current literature and of knowledge and skills developed by the learner through this program of study. This course will operate on the basis of frequent individual consultation and feedback between the student and the staff member nominated as the study supervisor. Before enrolling in the course, students are advised to discuss their proposal with the course examiner who will allocate a supervisor for the project. Implementation of the project will be facilitated and critically reviewed through ongoing learner-supervisor interaction and negotiation. NOTES

Attendance requirements:
There are no attendance requirements for this course however, the student it is the student鈥檚 responsibility to participate in all activities scheduled for them including meetings with their supervisor. It is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To complete the progress report satisfactorily, students must obtain a pass from the Examiner. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for both this course and HSC8080. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
Students will be awarded the grade of IIP (Incomplete - in progress) at the end of this course provided they demonstrate, via the Progress Report, that they have achieved the required minimum standards in relation to the objectives of the course by satisfactorily completing the requirements negotiated with the Supervisor and approved by the Examiner. When the independent project has been assessed in its entirety, the grade of IIP will be changed to the final grade. For example, if the student receives an HD for Masters Project B, then the grade of IIP for Nursing Masters Project A would be changed to an HD. -

Assessment notes

The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner.

Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This should be sent to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request from the Examiner to do so.

The examiner may, in consultation with the Program Coordinator, grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.

The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile.

The Progress Report, shall include satisfactory completion of the requirements negotiated with the Supervisor and approved by the Examiner to the minimum required standards in relation to the objectives of the course.
