Rationale
As the student population which undertakes the IHEP program is diverse in educational, social, geographical and economic circumstances, this course seeks to develop a broad base of undergraduate skills and attributes, allowing each student to begin from their own personal standpoint and knowledge base, and thus develop the necessary qualities required to reach a shared goal. The course operates from a ‘begin with the known and move to the unknown’ philosophy which means that the knowledge, skills and worldviews the students bring with them will be privileged alongside a community orientated skills development program. The course is designed to provide optimum flexibility for each student, recognising that knowledge is often place based and there is more than one (white) way of being in the world. The question how do you learn best will be explored and unpacked against the strict conventions of academia. This course is the third of three preliminary courses that scaffold students’ learning to ensure later success in the IHEP core courses.
Synopsis
Students focus on academic skills development. Conventions of academic writing and disciplinary texts will be unpacked within a distinctly First Nations context and worldview. The language skills, thinking skills and writing skills are provided in a broad context to best enable students to continue in their study journey. This course focuses on academic skills development associated with hearing, understanding, interpreting and writing in an academic context. A strong focus on reading for understanding, with an emphasis on creative and critical thinking.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- grasp the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage in relation to their tertiary studies
- comprehend the purpose of different types of texts
- comprehend and understand the purpose of referencing systems including the function of personal and community knowledge.

Attendance requirements:
This course requires attendance at a residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks. -
