Rationale

Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S) is a key priority in all work spaces, even more so when teaching students in a high risk environment. This course is designed to consider the Industrial Technology and Design (ITD) guidelines and practices to keep both the pre-service teacher and their students safe. As well as providing a safe environment, ITD teachers need to be aware of the legal obligations they need to abide by as professionals.
This course is an entry level course for pre-service teachers wishing to become ITD teachers within secondary schooling. The purpose of this course is to ensure that pre-service teachers in ITD are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to safely manage ITD specific work spaces and activities. This course is intended to ensure the pre-service teachers have a clear understanding of policies and procedures relating to ITD.

Synopsis

This course provides guidelines and practices which incorporate the concepts of risk management; machine licensing, the physical layout of a classroom, signage, barriers, test and tag, maintenance scheduling and safe storage of materials. The course will outline the processes to be followed within a school environment to keep all parties safe both physically and legally. Pre-service teachers will be shown how to access relevant documentation and hierarchies of control including documenting and communicating WH&S issues. Pre-service teachers are required to attend a school based workshop one morning or afternoon a week (whichever suits the school) during this semester.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. identify policies & procedures for a workshop environment;
  2. explain guidelines and practices relevant to teaching Technology and Design;
  3. identify documents relating to use and handling of materials and machinery;
  4. identify and apply process of Risk Management (including communication);
  5. undertake a workshop safety audit (including reporting and documentation of issues arising);
  6. demonstrate machine maintenance (including manuals and record keeping);
  7. explain WH&S legal requirements;
  8. outline the role of a WHSO and relevance to Technology and Design workshops.

    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students’ responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
    Students must attend and complete the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety training program for this course where required.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

Assessment notes

  1. Referencing in assignments must comply with the APA referencing system. This system should be used by students to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The APA style to be used is defined by the USQ library's referencing guide. This guide can be found at .

  2. Students are required to demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of academic language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and referencing in all assessment responses. Marks allocated to the aforementioned criteria will be specified in the criteria for assessment of all assessment items.

  3. Students are required to submit ALL assignments to evidence meeting or exceeding the mandatory requirements of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs).

Evaluation and benchmarking

In meeting the ¾«¶«´«Ã½app’s aims to establish quality learning and teaching for all programs, this course monitors and ensures quality assurance and improvements in at least two ways. This course:

c) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).
