Rationale
The successful practice of the profession of Mechanical Engineering requires an ability to analyse engineering systems and an ability to synthesise new designs. Much of the students work in other courses develops these analytical skills. In addition, the engineer must be able to assess a complex situation, identify the critical elements and develop a workable, cost effective solution. All of this requires considerable self-confidence, and the ability to work with and lead teams. In this course the synthesis of new ideas is developed whilst the student participates in a team-based design and build activity.
Synopsis
This course falls naturally into three parts:
Part One consists of a design activity where a small team of students develop a design concept and specification for a device capable of satisfying a broadly specified task.
Part Two comprises the procurement of appropriate resources and the design and construction of the device in accord with the design specification developed in Part One.
Part Three covers the testing of the device and encourages the student to reflect on the activities and outcomes of the work conducted in Part One and Part Two above.
This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes for on-campus students.
Objectives
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- interpret a task specification or regulatory document;
- develop design concepts in accordance with a generic requirement;
- apply, as appropriate to the design, the operation and construction features of a range of common mechanical devices;
- co-operate in a teamwork environment;
- identify and explain critical elements in practical situations and propose solutions;
- conduct a simple product development from initial specification to prototype stage;
- observe safety procedures in a workshop environment; and
- appraise the performance of a simple mechanical device constructed by the student as part of a team.

Attendance requirements:
External students must attend the mandatory residential school and on-campus students must attend the mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Students must attend and complete the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety training program for this course before they are able to undertake any practical work in the mechanical laboratories. -
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete the Participation and Attendance assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1. To satisfactorily complete any other individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks or a grade of at least C-. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course. -

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school or practical classes (achieve a mark of at least 80% for the Participation assessment item), and achieve at least 50% of the overall weighted marks for the course. -
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade. -
