Rationale
The 21st century musician is generally required to engage in a broad range of musical contexts in order to sustain a portfolio career. A knowledge of the social, cultural and ethical issues inherent in music will enable students to understand and critically engage with music from a broad range of perspectives.
Synopsis
This course is designed to introduce students to a range of critical perspectives through which to view music, and invites students to identify and critically examine the assumptions which underpin our understanding of the role of music in culture and society.
Objectives
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- research and evaluate a variety of critical perspectives through which to view music and its role in culture and society;
- interpret, communicate and present ideas about music from critical perspectives;
- recognise and reflect on the social, cultural and ethical issues present in narratives in and about music including its production, performance and consumption.
