Rationale

Mental health affects every age group and crosses over every demographic group in Australia. One in five Australians experiences symptoms of mental illness each year. Most people will experience some mental health symptomology at some point of time in their lives. A holistic approach, across all healthcare settings and specialties, is required. Nurses need to be prepared to work with individuals and groups of people who are living with mental illness or suffering from acute emotional distress that can result from increased stress, trauma, loss, illness and/or hospitalisation. The effects of mental illness can be severe on the individual, families, carers and significant others across the community. Its influence is far reaching in society as a whole. Effective, holistic practice develops as a result of the integration of a range of skills, and content knowledge, including self-awareness performed in a variety of nursing contexts. Nurses with an understanding and appreciation of the complexity of mental health issues in different practice settings, establish a solid foundation for enhancing their capacity to be an effective registered nurse.

Synopsis

In this course students acquire knowledge and develop the attitudes and skills relevant to meet the needs of individuals and groups of people living with mental health problems. Emphasis is placed on contemporary nursing and evidence-based practice. Students will have the opportunity to integrate theory into practice and will use an ethical framework for decision-making and critical self-analysis to explore the concepts of prejudice and stigma. Students will explore the most common and pervasive mental illnesses burdening Australian society such as depression and suicide, substance-related disorders, and anxiety. Additionally, the nursing assessment and care of people with serious mental illness such as psychoses, affective disorders, thought disorders, and eating disorders will be introduced. The mental health needs of persons of diverse ages, from child hood to older adults, and those living in urban to rural communities will also be explored in order to be able to adapt approaches and understand resources and delivery models. Students will develop an understanding of the individual experience of mental illness, its symptomatology and evidence-based interventions including pharmacological and other therapeutic measures. In the clinical practice course: NUR3599 Mental Health Care in Practice students will be provided opportunities for application of the theoretical material presented in this course.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Understand the complex history of mental illness and the treatment of individuals living with mental health in our communities.
  2. Understand the Recovery process and the Recovery 鈥渟tar鈥 model of mental healthcare in Australia.
  3. Understand mental health legislation across Australia鈥檚 states and territories and the rights of individuals.
  4. Achieve a beginning understanding of psychotic and non-psychotic symptoms, common mental health disorders, and treatments, and associated side effects.
  5. Understand the specialised role of the mental health nurse within the Australian mental healthcare context.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:

    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle) and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the marks available for that assessment item.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered to a Student who has undertaken all of the summative assessment items in a Course and who has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy a Secondary Hurdle (Supervised); or satisfied a Secondary Hurdle ( Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final grade by 5% or less of the total weighted marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).
