Rationale
This course provides an introduction to the dynamic interdisciplinary acute care context of nursing including management individuals with acute and episodic health problems. Students require a deep understanding of the current acute care health concerns for people across the lifespan. Preparing students for evidence-based practice to address national health priorities is essential to developing knowledgeable, skilled safe, ethical nursing professionals. Acute illness episodes require complex and diverse interventions, requiring nurses to develop critical thinking and decision-making skills to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Synopsis
This course is the first of three Acute Care Across the Lifespan courses. In Acute Care A students will be introduced to the theoretical aspects of acute health care and the impact on individuals, families and communities. Students will explore national health priorities and current trends in evidence based management of acute episodes of illness or injury. In this course students will be introduced to relevant pathophysiology and life span considerations in the provision of nursing care. Trauma management and clinical triage techniques, including medical, surgical and mental health acute presentations and their respective pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments will be discussed.
Objectives
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- Understand the role of the nurse in diverse acute care environments and acute health concerns (National Health Priorities) across the lifespan within the Australian context
- Develop an understanding of critical thinking, clinical decision making and evidence for acute care nursing practice including legal and ethical considerations
- Understand nursing care across the lifespan approaches for patients experiencing acute emergency, trauma, surgical intervention and mental health presentations
- Understand underlying pathophysiology of acute health concerns and their pharmacological and non-pharmacological management
- Understand information literacy and effective communication within clinical and academic contexts
